Title: Disco Auto box question
Post by: ibruceuk on August 14, 2006, 19:23:29
I have a 1993 3.5 Efi Disco with an Auto box and have a quick question to reassure me.

What engine speed is 'normal' for the box to pull away in Drive?  Mine sits around 2000rpm to pull reasonably, with about the next step being 2500rpm etc.

Hope this makes sense!

Also who exactly do you check the oil level?  I assumed to do it in Neutral with engine running.  It was low due to oil cooler leak and didn't read on dipstick at all, after adding 1 litre it now smears the lower part of the dipstick going past the max mark does this sound right?

Cheers,

Ian

I have a 1996 300TDi auto not sure what you mean by what speed it pulls off at but as for the oil proceedure below...

Make sure vehicle is level, select Park and start engine.  With engine still running at idle speed and foot brake depressed and handbrake on move selector to position 1 and then back to park.

withdraw dipstick and wipe clean, reinsert dipstick to check the level, used Dextron IID to top up.   1/2 pint of oil is required to raise the level from the lower to the upper mark.

I hope that helps, if you can explain the other thing I will try it and let you know, I think both our gearboxes are the same.
