Title: Whistle While I Clutch
Post by: Fireyred on August 15, 2006, 09:18:10
Can any body help me with a whistle problem on my 90.

It started 3 days ago and is getting worse.

When I start to put my Clutch down I get a high pitch whistle noise, which it quite loud, when it's to the floor I can here and feel a light rumble too.

Could be the clutch thrust bearing.

Sounds to me like the thrust bearing too, It'll need to be changed soon Lorna otherwise it'll break up and let you down.

Hi Lorna,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but its a gearbox out job to replace the thrust bearing, I usually have the whole clutch replaced while the box is out, saves trouble later.

I'm sure Rich knows who could do it for you.

Last time mine was done it cost about £250 inc parts, but that was for everything in the clutch.

Sorry about that, unfortunately (as far as I know) thrust bearings aren't servicable from outside, you can only get to them by taking things apart.

definately thrust bearing. there are 2 ways of deing it, either lifting the engine out, or getting the gearbox out. quite a big job im afraid

Okay, thanks for everyone's help and advice.

Trying to call R M Motor's in Rushden. He normally does other half's car.
Will get him to take a look, just on the off chance it something else, less costly and in depth.

Is an F reg though. Have called the Nene Overland too. Where I got it from, see what they think. Also if it still in warrenty or not. As had a few other things go wrong too. Not my day.

Cheers.

Just a thought, what damage would it do driving about on it.
Is it best to not drive it for now tioll it sorted?

Some thrust bearings will rumble and squeak for quiet a while, they are quiet hardy things. It probably won't hurt if it's driven a bit more. I would only stop driving if it is affecting the gearchange or there is a severe vibration felt. I know one chap who has been meaning to sort his for a year now.

Mailorder 4x4 are doing a deal on Valeo clutch kits  (http://www.mailorder4x4.com/)

Cheers.

Got parts today from Paddocks. Clutch Kit and new arm.
ANC delivered it, wow they found an address, although they are behind where I work so would have been funny if they said they couldn't find it. :(bigsmile):

Not driven her all week, as first gear has become hard to get in, hoping nothing else wrong with her, still getting a faint Whistle noise. :(mad):

Fingers crossed it goes in the garage Sat am, being done Tue. :(scared):

Hope it only that.

Keep you all posted.

Thanks
