Have just got my Defender 90 TD back from getting new injectors and new pre chambers, yet it still pumps out tonnes of white fumes at start up. Any ideas as to what this could be? It doesnt do it after the engine has warmed up so am not really sure. I got the new injectors to stop the engine smoking, not to make it worse. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated. Cheers,

Is it still hard to start? Could be that one or more of the glow/heater plugs isn't working that could give you the unburnt fuel. White smoke can also mean water in the fuel. Have you checked the fuel filters?

or could be headgasket
take the filler cap off and see if their is any oily resudue in the water or drain abit off, also check for water in oil

Yeah it is still really hard to start. Normally i can turn the key untill the orange light thingy turns on, and leave it for about 10 seconds, it turns over a few times and then starts fine (followed by ALOT of white smoke). However now, i have to leave it heating up for a good 30 seconds or so, and have to do that about 3 times. Hope that may help abit?

As 'BigGreen' has said head gasket is a possiblity but I'd keep it simple to start by checking the glow plugs.
Either a head gasket leak or glow plugs not working could make it hard to start and give unburnt fuel or water in the exhaust; which is the white smoke you are seeing.

you need to find out if its fuel or water, a trained nose at the tail pipe will be able to tell.
but it shouldnt have got worse after new injectors? unless the fuel pumps knackered.

could be down on compression, rings a possability, take the filler cap off when its running and see if its breathing heavy, or do it N/A style and take the dipstick out and see if oil p***** out  cue goosed engine and time to buy a 200 off me

Unless the new injectors are putting in even more unburnt fuel :D
I agree with trained nose :D

Have just taken Grace (90) to local land rover place and they said it might be the timings on the injectors? That might be totaly wrong but thats what they said as ar as i can remember. Any ideas?

possability, but timing doesnt slip like that, unless someone has changed the timing belt and timed it up wrong
-
all you need to make a diesel go is fuel & hot air & the correct timing of the 2 getting thrown together,
there is no timing adjustment on the injectors themselves just at the pump
so as dan says its either timing belt problem to make timing out,TBH thinking about it i think you might have an injection pump problem, ill come back in a few minutes & explain

when my tdi is cold & i start it i get a cloud of white/light blue smoke that has only stated since fitting "another" injection pump, the one that was on it will be getting reconned asap to stop the smoke
