Title: Calling computer peeps (again)

Ok, I've got this damn PC working hardware wise (See "Calling all PC Technicians (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=26724&highlight=calling)" and "Personal thanks to Micromark (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=26152&highlight=micromark)") but now I got software issues :troll:

Whenever I'm playing Music (WMP 10, MP3 Files) it will appear to "skip" like a scratched CD Would. It's not a problem in the file itself, so any ideas on what ELSE is wrong with this thing?

try and find a previous version...version 10 had issues on my home pc ...did exactly what you describe

WMP is very processor hungry

try a free media player like winamp (http://www.winamp.com)

erm if winamp makes the pc crash then there is another underlying problem too.

you could try itunes or something.

Please no one suggest that again, or I will be forced to do not very nice acts to them.

There probobly are loads of underlying problems, but I've reached a smooth patch, and don't want to upset it.

if winamp causes a blue screen, i would seriously consider throwing it in the nearest skip and starting fresh. had a similar problem with MP, switched to winamp and had no problems..

It doesn't blue screen - But it causes the PC to become very jittery, and the tracks skip even more.

The PC is no slouch either:
Althon XP 3000+ 2.17ghz
512mb Ram
120gb HDD
Radeon 9200SEC

seriously i'd consider a complete re-install back to basics, and reinstall 1 thing at a time ..then any problems are easier to trace.

We need more info here.

What processor is it?
How much Memory is on-board?
Make and model of the machine or motherboard?
Dose it have on-board sound or a PCI sound card?
What version of Windows is running?
What program is being used to play the music?

However is all sounds to me as if the machine might be trying to run too many processes in the background.

Try this as a experiment.

Click Start.
Click on Run.
In the box type:  msconfig
Click ok.
Now click on the Startup tab
Click the disable all button.
Click apply and the OK
Restart the machine.
Try playing a music file.

If it plays ok repeat the prosess and only select the startup items you think you need.

If it makes no differance simply reselect all the startup items and restart.

I just got the damn thing right after I did that... Flaming PCs...

Sounds to me like a messed up sound card driver installation. Or too many things attempting to use the sound card, like MP, Skype, MSN or whatever is running.

Make sure you have the right drivers for the sound card too, could be your using a driver for a similar but not identical chipset.

I would also visit Control Panel and the sound card icon and make sure its setup as the preferred device, and that the sliders are set for best performance.

Alternatively Id fix all the issues and install Linux  :D

I have 30gb set aside for Unbuntu once I get round to it... and it's looking more tempting by the day.

if winamp 10 crashes try finding and using an older version...worked for me!
