I have a disco commercial as a work van at the minute and while coming back from a job today the hazard lights started flashing for no reason, so i pull over and stop switch everything off and they,re still flashing :?
removing the key i get out and attempt to lock the car, nothing on the fob and using the key it only locks the drivers door so the central locking has stopped working :?
I get back in and restart the engine and everything returns to normal ????
any ideas anyone on what the hell is going on ?

We've (a few of us locals) had the hazards come on while laning if we give it a good jolt - did you hit a pothole?
We do the same, turn it off, leave it a minute and restart it.
We suspect it is the car reacting to the 'accident' and warning other road users (hazards) and adopting some sort of 'get you home' attitude.

that used to happen on mine when using the H12 hydraulic winch. it was something to do with an earth fault between the remote leads and the vehicle electrics.
added more earth straps, etc, and it ain't happened since.

There was talk of this being a throwback from the Camel Trophy; in the old days when the Camel was rough and tough if a Disco dropped off the edge of a cliff something would switch the hazards on to tell the rest of the team it was in trouble.
Sound a bit 'urban myth' to me.
Then there is also the suggestion that there might be a problem with the alarm ECU, as replacing it has been know to solve the problem.

As said above mine also does that if i suddenly jolted it greenlaning i turned it off and left for few mins and everything comes back done it several times now

It's a built in safety precaution incase of an accident. Should you be involved in an accident, hazards come on and the electric doors locks open automatically. I've got a lovely video of the wife driving the Disco through a huge pot hole, huge thump as the tank guard hits the deck and the hazards come on  It should only happen after an impact though, don't know where the sensor is but it shouldn't happen under normal conditions.

mine was doing that quite regular, i got fed up with so pulled the right fuse out, aint got central locking now but its stopped it doing it, i put it down to water gerring in the alram box under bonnet!

its done it again today :? this time i went to start it and it wouldnt , as though the immobiliser had been activated so i turn everything off and restart no problem but then the hazards come on ( i,ve not moved the vehicle yet) so i turn all off go have a brew and come back hazards have now stopped :? everything returned to normal , i,ve checked all the earths and they seem fine to me and i,ve added an extra one to see what happens now

I had this a few times, turned out the plug was loose on the green box above the passenger footwell. If you take off the panel and look up its to the left, plugs plug in straight up. one of them was a lit loose and if you jiggle it the hazards come on, if you remove the plug the alarm sounds.

It could be a damp connector. Also could be a dodgy mounting on wherever the shock sensor is.
-
I also had it when I hit a bump the hazards come on, but only happened once or twice.

I just had this problem, had me stumped for a while, I tried unplugging the alarm module... no result then I looked here. I just had to wait a while and then turn the ignition on and behold it works!!
Strange thing is I'm glad I don;t have airbags! I set the inertia sensor off my hitting the steering wheel while trying to remove it! I did hit it hard I suppose.

whilst out today in my mums discovery 300tdi 1997 ES, somebody wanted to talk to my sister and the rear windows stopped working again so i gave the dash a thump coz usually this works by jolting that black box underneath, well the windows started working but also the hazards came on aswell this has happened before but it nomally goes off like the posts above.
but not this time i drove it home with everybody pointing like i was an idiot and i have had to take the battery off to stop the hazards flashing, but it will not reset itsself ive looked at the green alarm box but cant see anything wrong please cna anyone help. joe
