I can make my Disco bounce a hell of a lot without much effort. I can stand normaly next to the disco without bracing myself and with one hand make the disco bounce as if there were no shocks.
It looks like it is mainly the front two shocks that are a problem.
I decided to remove one of the recently fitted (2/3 months old) Procomp shocks.
As soon as I removed it I tried compressing and decompressing it. There were about 6 inches of travel where there was no resistance whatsoever, I could compress and decompress it with no trouble at all (as easy as moving and elastic band). The rest of the travel was much harder to compress and decompress, you could hear the gas/liquid slurping though like when they were new. On that note, I have not noticed any leaks from the shocks.
So tell me, is this normal? I can’t imagine it is.

doesnt sound right to me, ring explorer uk on tues ...they will prob send you new ones.

Have you fitted your shocks as you show in your diagram with the shock body at the top and the piston at the bottom? If so this is the most likely cause of your shocks early demise. I have bought several sets of procomp shocks and every time i have been warned to make sure the fronts are the right way up (you cant fit the rears upside down). If i remember right i think it is stamped on the shock too.

when ever theres a problem with a shocker it seems to be one of these, or it just seeming that way as there are more of them out there?

There seem to be a lot of comments regarding Pro Comp .
I am in now way defending them but you have to ask ...
Is it coz more people can afford lift kits and there are more companys offering them ?
Is it "home" mechanics fitting them wrong and causing failure ?
I cant see why you could mount fronts one way and the rears another ?

If you've still got the receipt then you should have not problems getting a new set. You may have to remove the others to see how may are defective.
Did you fully compress & decompress the shocks a few times before fitting? I remember reading it on the instructions for gas shocks once and have always done it before fitting them.
I've had three sets of Procomps on various Landies and the only problem I've had is the weld going on the top of one rear shocker.
A mate of mine also had this exact problem with two De Carbon gas shocks within a week of fitting them and had them change without problems, so it's not just Procomp! :wink:

A hell of a lot of lift kits come with pro-comp, they can't all be wrong. A lot of us fit them because of the warranty too, oh and the wide variety of available sizes.

Whilst I may or may not believe there is a problem with a certain manufacturer's shocks we all have to remind ourselves there are parts that will take a hammering whilst in pursuit of fun
I think shocks do take abuse on or off tarmac I have fitted in the past gas and the LR replacement ones... sometimes I wonder why fit gas (Yes i realize recovery rates and heat build up)
having said that if anybody whats to give me there unreliable pro comp plus 2" shocks I will gladly take them of your hands :lol:

I've got standard woodhead ones on the LSE and they aren't as good. You don't notice at first but when you do it's hairy :o
I had to fit procoamp on the front to cover up (not cure) the vibration problem I was having. I say vibration, more like trying to jump off the road. New air springs fixed it (fingers crossed).
I think i'll fit Pro comp all round, well it's rude not to given the extra travel my new springs have :D

i still have procomps and wouldnt move away from them. i know there have been a lot of posts recently but i feel that is simply due to the popularity of the lift kit compared with a few years ago.
i have always found explorer uk very helpful .....the only dmaper i have had fail is a decarbon...

I've switched to pro-comps after having a pair of de-carbons snap on me. Personally I've had no problems with pro-comp at all

gotta have my pennies worth....my mate has ben on pro comps for two years and no problems ....you will always get good and bad sides to all things in life :D :D

I managed to break one of my pro-comps....... is this classed as abuse or normal wear and tear? Managed to do this at Tong - still don't know how? But other than this I've no complaints with Pro-comps.

Was the dent in the tube there first?

No, I think the dent was caused by trapping the shock between the axel and the chassis rail some how, probably after the lower mount broke!

Ah, so it was mounting failure rather tnan the shoker itself.

Not realy sure what gave way first, the radius arm was bent as well and had to be replaced. I think I did it hitting a tree root on a rutted climb, the only violent stop of the day. Drove round for another hour or so and didn't notice a problem til we hit the motorway heading for home and started to feell seasick with the wallowing. Still made it home before we relised the full damage!
