I'm looking to buy an on road toy (must be a middle age thing :( ) Probably only cover a couple of thousand miles a year so really got to be a V8 or even V12
Still keeping Disco for off road toy :D :D :D
and diesel Vectra for shopping, school etc.
Budget up to around 10k but would prefer less.
Any ideas??

Audi RS4 4.7Lt V8
Go take one for a drive, it'll take ages for the grin to go away. Or if you want the comfort A8 W12, nice big comfortable saloon car with the ability to pin you to the seat and make you go OOOOoooooosssshhhh......
-
or audi s8
comfort and oomph
but rs4 is better and faster than an m3 or 5 if you are considering one (cant remember which but ive seen a video to prove it ;))

if you can find an S8 :)
A3 3.2 Quattro supercedes the S3 and A8 W12 supercedes the S8 I dont think theres an S4 anymore, just the RS 4
-
It's not on your list but you need a proper on road toy, get a suzuki gsx-r 1000 :D For 10K you could get two!

Little matter of not having a licence for a two wheeler :(

Any ideas??
Something made in Blackpool, or Hethel
Juat anything but a B*W
(do you still get red braces with one?)
-
I did a direct access to get my license. Five full days spread over two weeks with a test on the last day. There is no excuse!

I think they still do S4 Cabs, the wifes boss bought one last year, sounds great. (He's also just taken delivery of a Q7, looks much better in the flesh than in the pictures)

I thought the 8 series was rare enough to be OK  Hethel? better give me a clue on that one :?
-
Lotus elise or VX220 for that kinda money :)

And one of those brick sized car phoness???
Hethel? better give me a clue on that one :?
The Norfolk home of Lotus

The Elise/Exige is an -awesome- car performance wise, and -very- little to touch it for the money, but you really should do a long-term (ie. weekend) test drive in one as the seats can be VERY uncomfortable (there's little padding and virtually no adjustment) so you might end up dreading getting into the thing!
And don't get a yank - they're almost universally rubbish-handling cars (and I'm not saying that just because I'm Canadian!).
Just my 2p.
-
What about a Subaru Imprezza or a Mitsubishi Evo?
8)
-
What about a Westfield?
Westfield + Rover V8.... Drool Material... :P
-
Forget BMw/merc/Porche/Vet....... COBRA is the toy you need and you could possibly get a decent one for less than £10k
HERE (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pilgrim-Sumo-AC-Cobra-427-V8-Replica_W0QQitemZ180020610778QQihZ008QQcategoryZ29750QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
Thats the type of car i'll be getting later next year
Nice wheels in your avatar :D :D . They sent me another set after 1st were all badly warped  , these ones are perfect :D .

I'll econd that. A mate has an 01 Pontiac Firebird WS6 and I've pulled him out of fields before now, when clarkson was drooling over the GTO and making the remarks about it beign the first high powered US car to do corners, he wasnt kidding :)
-
I know where £10.5k will get you a very, make that disgustingly quick, red TVR. Many toys, 430HC V8 lump with tuned headers, hot cam, head work, Mustang box, LSD etc. etc.
-
TVRs also have the Land Rover added bonus of always having something that needs work on them :D
Build quality is absolutely dire on them, regardless of age. Will be interesting to see if the new Russian owner really does improve quality like he says he's trying to.
Edit - actually I'm just thinking I reckon strangely enough I'd get a fastback (original) Mustang. Suppose it depends what you're buying the thing for... alternatively as mentioned above, if you're looking for a racer/gokart, a Westfield would rock for reasonable money.
-
Problem is I need an occasional pair seats fo kids in the back. so thats the Vette of the list along with the Cobra, Westfield and the Lotus
-
Hard top or soft top? fast road or track?
-
Fancy a soft top or a big coupe, would like a V8 (or 12)Auto RWD and need to carry two kids on occasions so all the two seaters are out, but the 2+2's would be OK. Not after a track car, would prefer a bit more comfort, more of a 'Grand Tourer'

One of the members on here (& local to me) has one :D
(think it's a Sumo?? Doubtless he'll correct me if he sees this)

test drive a proper merc !
The SLs use the old 5 speed .
The rest of th range now has a 7 speed auto.
Fully tiptronic on the stick or padels.
Drove a 320 CDI the other day and made the SL350 look daft !
Bad roof design and no rear seats !!
I tested a 270 and 320 salloon (both 3.0 )
And the ML 320.
They are very nice but want to be at 70K
For what you want/budget the porsche is a good bet although servicing costs are cheeky.

TVR Cerbera??
4.2 V8
Giant-killing performance
2+2, but no auto option
Not too sure of the price, as they're few & far between; Vauxhall Monaro
On a similar vein.
As tested by the 'Boys in Blue'
5seater, 4-door hatch, 159MPH.................. Vectra GSi
-
I have been looking down that line myself.
I settled on a Jaguar XJR....The straight six Supercharged model.
The V8 is too unreliable.
You can mess around with these models without affecting relability.
Change pully`s on the Supercharger etc. :D
You can find good, low mileage, service history examples for between 5-7k.
Insurance is classic, quote for me was £260 ish.
They will do 30mpg on a run with a light foot!
I havn`t purchased one yet  ........I can`t seem to justify 3 bikes and 3 cars......Just yet.
Worth a drive though.....They are like silk on a normal road, with a kick in the pants.....They also look so unassuming to other road users.
Just my 2pth.

You can't really call those leather bits in the back 'seats'. I know a bloke that had one and his ten year old daughter could only just manage to fit in the back. Beautiful car but it spent so much time at the dealer and back in blackpool he had to get rid.

Admittedly they are a bit small

Sounds like something built in Solihull
-
I also looked at the Porsche 928.
Late models 92-94.
Approx 400 BHP, trying to tie down a definate figure is a nightmare with all the macho sh1te that surrounds these things.
I concluded that they were too much money for bang per buck, but they do sound sweet and one of the few motors that actually do make the ground vibrate when on tickover :D
V8....MMMmmmmm.
Later Corvettes with suspension easily modified.....V8 again...Mmmm.
No, the Jag does have it for me......Unassuming, non-flash.
Go and drive lot`s of the things, get yer list worked out first though.....Lists only work for the head and it is your heart that buys these things :!:
On reflection, I think I have got it out of my system with research and test drives.... :?
-
Hmm so we want practical and fast...
RS2
0-60 in 4.6s on a stock one, not many were left stock. And its an estate so you get the best of everything. Its the well known and loved Audi 20VT 5 Cylinder with a bit of Porsche magic.
Problem is, finding one and they still go for at least £12k even though most are M reg
-
Erm... cat amongst pidgeons time,
How about:
V8 Ninety, fit autobox, convert to a soft-top/SV/NAS type, stiffen (lower :?: ) suspension, road tyres, bling wheels, leather seats, nice paint job...
Got to be do-able for 10K? Scare the hell out of all the Chav corsas at the traffic lights 8)
My idea anyway.
Steve.

Another cat? Those pigeons will be well scattered by now
How about a Skoda Octavia vRS MkI? Same 1.8T engine as in the base spec Audi TT, putting out 180BHP.
Looking at 0-60 in about 8 seconds (for the estate - the hatch is slightly faster), and the engine can be tuned (without too many headaches) to about 225BHP, although I've heard of them going much higher than that - they tend to go bang a bit quicker the higher you go!
The MkII's also available, running a 2.0 normally aspirated engine, kicking out about 190BHP, although the 10k budget's more likely to bag you a very, very good MkI.
I've got a '53 plate MkI estate, and I'm very happy with it. Paid about 11k for it 8 months ago. It's come in very useful while moving house as I don't currently have a Land Rover :(
Handles really, really well, and seems to put the power down a lot better than my previous VAG vehicles (Passat and Golf, both with 130BHP TDi's). Really stable in and out of corners, although I've not had it on a track yet.
Cheers
Ben

or even better a westfield with a suzuki hayabusa engine... 0-60 approx 2 seconds.. makes ANY supercar lok silly.. and they are made about 1 mile from me ;)
200 bhp and they weigh about the same as an anorexic gnat. plus they rev to 13000 rpm :D:D:D:D:D:D:D
-
Or why not go 'old school' and get a Genuine Ford Cossie??
or even better E type (ok so for 10k it'd be a 'ropey' one..)
or (about to upset BTM) a 635Csi BMW?? I would give my kids / right testical/left arm / 1st born etc for one of those.. theres a stunning BLACK one in kings heath ..drooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
-
(about to upset BTM) a 635Csi BMW??
Noooooooooooooo
Red brace wearing yuppie-mobile

I voted to get a Merc, they are cracking cars and you can get alot of car for a lot less than your £10k budget. The sound of a Merc V8 or V12 is hard to beat, they are also very reliable and easy to work on.
I restored a 500 SEC a few years back, fantastic car, ever so fast (in a straight line!!) limo like comfort.

After trying a 928 s4  :D I'm starting to head in that direction, although another thought I had was.................................................
Mulsane Turbo

re the Jaguar XJR, been looking at those myself, saw a gorgeous one t'other day on flebay, went for £3k...now thats in my budget :D:D:D

how about an overfinch Rangie???
best of both worlds, or an early tickford turbo en-vogue? rare as a rare thing in a hens tooth
-
what about a toyota supra... the twin turbo model was seriously tuneable, and there are some fantastic ones about for £10k...
....or a proper skyline....
or find some more money and track down a lotus carlton....
...or, if you can stand the chavyness... a subaru... serious road speed for £10K
steer clear of cossies... silly repair bills, and many are heading for 20 years of age, and will have been thrashed repeatedly during that time.
just remember that proper speed costs proper money, usually in servicing and repair bills.........
personally i'd go for an early 1990's porsche 911, timeless cool, proper scary performance, VW build quality, easy to get parts, reasonable(ish) running costs.... and scream like nothing on earth when you realy open them up.....

How about a 6x6 101? (http://www.lobsternet.org/101)
Sorry, that was a shameless plug... On the bright side, you'd get the two kids in the back OK, and it is a V8!
-
nissan skyline gtr!!!!!!!!
or if you want to be a little less lunatic and get something that was available in this country the 200sx is fun on roundabouts with rear drive and plenty poke.

Mulsane Turbo
I have had quite a few Mercs now, yes some owners have their problems and yes you only tend to hear about the problems rather than the praise. I have to say the original ML's were bad, very bad actually. The build quality was quite shocking nowhere near as good as the old G wagens but then a different market I guess. I hear the latest ML's are OK.
The cars are OK, avoid C and E classes from mid 90's to 2002 ish, they rust terrible! The SL's and S's and upper market cars seem to be OK. I have a 2003 E320CDi and am very impressed with it, loads of power and very economical for a big car, 44mpg+ is the norm on a long trip.
I have friends with E55AMG's and SL55AMG's and they don't feel that much quicker or better to me, on paper only a few seconds difference.
