hiya guys the v8 has devolped a very horrid knocking noise in 3rd gear  every thing else is fine. been told its a layshaft bearing ???
i have 2 questions about this.
1. would it be easyer to fix this or swop the gearbox????
2. will the box from a 2.1/4 diesal series 3 be a str8 swop?
any help or ideas plz?

It would help if we knew what gearbox is already in the vehicle.

 one of them ones thats got lots of little cogs and stuff innit .........
to be honest i dont know what would be best way to identify this then ?
i just presumed a standard series box?

When people do V8 conversions, they sometimes do all sorts to the vehicle. Could you provide a photo of the transmission tunnel with the gear stick and transferbox levers visible?

ill sort one out asap
but compared to my other series 3 the setup is no differant :)
but ill take a piccy

If it has 3 levers and looks the same as most other series then it should be a series box. If your lucky it will be a straight swap. The clutch release mechanism is different between models couldnt tell you how though. Rich?

I can say that the 2A clutch setup is different to the Series 3 clutch setup. Both are hydraulic, but the first difference outside the bellhousing is that the 2A pushrod on the bellhousing is on the offside, while on the S3 it is on the nearside. :) The internals are rather different, but I'm unable to give the details on them as I don't have a clue.

There series 3 setup is that similar to the 90 and discovery set up. The slave cylinder will be found on the underside of the bell housing on the passenger side. And all the linkages and push road are inside the bell housing.
The series 2 set up is the slave cylinder is in the vertical position on the drivers side of the bell housing halfway up. (It is about level with the floor) This then pushes a rod that goes through the bell housing on the drivers side which then actuates the clutch linkage.

yup its exactly the same inside as my series 3 and on the receipts from the conversion it does say fit customers current g/box and the wouldnt supply any kind of warrenty for fitting this box to a v8
