Title: rear door ladder
Post by: tonka toy on August 31, 2006, 21:24:03
I have just bought a rear ladder for a mk1 disco, it came with a small bar that the so called instructions said should be bolted to the chassis.

Does any body have any ideas where this bar should go or wether to use it at all and just use the four mounts.

Any thoughts.

cheers

It sounds to me like the "tool" used to install the captive nuts - what a b****** job that was

Be very exact with the size of holes you drill and follow the instructions ... and good luck

Gords

all the instructions say is to bolt this bar to the chassis,  nothing else.

is it best just to use the four holes on the ladder and forget the bar

neil :?

Is the bar a supporting brace for behind the metalwork which the ladder can bolt through to stop the nuts pulling through the bodywork ?

With my ladder, I had a bar with one hole it it. It was used to install the captive nuts underneath the number plate and on top of the door.

There was not anything other than the ladder that fixed onto the car. maybe you have a different design of ladder?

the bar is about 4 unches long ang has one bolt allready through one hole, it will not reach between the holes on the ladder.

i might just use the four hole on the ladder and forget the bar.

The bar is for fitting the captive nuts (Riv Nuts) you screw them on to the bolt put the nut in the hole then tighten the bolt which sqeeze's the Riv Nut to hold it in place,
you then mount the ladder to the Riv Nuts in the door!

sorry to keep on about this

these nutserts, when you push the body of the insert with the bolt in into the hole and start to tighten the nut does the the smooth part collapse leaving the threaded  part to be screwed into to mount the ladder.

i wish they would put better instructions with these things :?  :?:

Yes, that's what happens ... you need to do them quite tight so they stop trying to turn round.
