Title: What Winch?
Post by: wetnwild on September 05, 2006, 22:58:08
Hey guys,

Have got to that point now where there is one thing missing from the front of matilda - her winch - and there's one thing missing from my knowledge - what winch!

Can anybody help me here please?

What type of winch should I get?  How much pulling power should it have?  What do others have?

Help me!!!!

Cheers for now,
Nick.

The cheaper winches are ok but you get what you pay for!
If you spend £300 on a winch then it'll be something like Champion, KEW, GEW, Comeup, T-Max & Bearmach. It's harder to get spares for these if you need them and things like motors and solenoids (which tend to go on them) are the same price as makes like Warn and Superwinch so if anything goes then your not really saving money.
Champion and GEW/KEW are the same winch, made in China, only different badging.

You want something with over 8000 lbs line pull, generally they say 1.5 times the vehicle weight.
I've had Superwinch X9's and had no problems with them.
I have a GEW 10000 in the Disco now and the motor has gone after about two years of heavy but not regular service.
I've just got (box arrived today) a Warn XD9000 to replace the GEW. Sure it cost more but I know I can get all the spares for it from various outlets.

Last months LRE magazine had a load of articles on winching in there which maybe worth a read.
What ever you go for, have a good look around as the winch I got was over £100 more expensive at some outlets!!

I got a Warn XD9000i for my RRC and its a fantastic piece of kit....pulled a 90  and a 110 (tied together!) up a muddy hill when the winch (GEW i think) on my mates 110 cooked its motor....

So they do cost more....look out for 2nd hand ones, that way you pay the same money but get a much better quality winch.

If its only for show then buy a 5hitpart one or similar, but if you are going to use it offroad then pay the money and get something that wont let you down!

Personally i would want a old pto winch on a series i think a modern winch will look wrong.  IMHO only.

my advice would be that if your budget cant stretch to a 9500lbs Warn then get a Superwinch EP9 or 9i - my preference would be for the 9 due to the solenoid setup being remote.

I have a warn 9.5ti which has been good overall given the abuse it has recieived, from the motor filling with mud and giving up and the solenoids when they were on the 'bridge' of the winch- but i have modified it to move the solenoids to under the bonnet + in cab hard wired controls...... much more civilised now!

Superwinch is a good choice on a budget (although it's not what I've got).

As it's going on a Series and you are not likely to use it that much and by the sounds of it only for recovery of yourself or others, a budget model like the Champion might be a better bet.

I've had two and never had any problems. Bit slow but powerful and ull for ever (with the right set up). Parts are becoming less of a problem with a dedicated UK importer if something breaks.

Try a 9000lbs as a 10000lbs might be overdoing slightly for your application. For under £300 (and some rope on its own can cost nearly that) you can't go wrong IMHO.

pointless unless he's planning to do challenge events or hardcore plaesure offroading
why go and spend in the region of 795 to anything up to 900 quid for a winch that he's going to use occasional to recover himself and others

I was thinking of changing it anyway Neil, your visit just gave it a little push that's all!!
I'm still going to replace the motor and then sell it on up here, seeing as I now have a new roller fairlead and new wire for it. That way I get some of the money back and end up with a better winch into the process!!  :D

You sure you don't want wider tyres before a winch or are you just keeping away from sand from now on?  :(biglaugh):

fair comment for comp work but i dont rate either of mine for every day use neither are as good as the huskeys i used to use although the 8274 are much faster.  if your planning on doing events buy the 8274s if not steer clear!!
