Title: loss of power
Post by: mark on September 06, 2006, 09:38:33
Hello.

A friend of mine has a 300tdi disco ES Auto which has just developed a problem. The engine won’t rev above 3,000 rpm, the way the vehicle gets to this engine speed has not changed. Once engine reaches 3,000 rpm the vehicle loses power and puffs out a little black smoke.
I’m a V8 man and a bit lost's with diesels, the Turbo must come in around that rpm?
Does anyone have an idea or experienced this problem before

Mark

check the intercooler pipes, may be delaminated and sucking together :)

The turbo should come in at around 1500 rpm so if he isn't feeling any boost from that then try the above.

If he is getting a whistle then look for splits in the intercooler pipes. Remove the pipes and check for delamination on the inside.
Under the EGR valve there is a threaded bar that runs from the turbo to the exhaust manifold. This operates the waste gate and is secured using a "C" clip. I had mine fall off and that caused no turbo boost, easy to replace although a bit tough to get to.
