ok im sure this isn't right.....
i bought a new exhaust for my 3.9 EFI disco after ripping it off after taking it off roading, and after the first week after installing it, it has become very sooty inside and around the tail piece....
it also runs ok with out smoke at low revs, but asoon as i boot it, smoke or soot comes from the exhaust
my question is..... is my engine running correctly???
im sure my engine is fine but im thinking it is more than likely to be the way the ECU is fueling my engine.... and that maybe a sensor isnt working properly........... i may be wrong but would like some feed back of some V8 owners (especaily you range rover blues)
oh and also i have got my timing abit advance so i got a few more horses from my engine, and to in crease my MPG

Modern lead free petrol is to blame. It leaves soot. You cant avoid it.
My bikes have been dyno'd and for max power you tend to run leanish...they still have sooty exhausts . Crap really.

Yep i run a 3.5 efi disco also, all emission levels are correct with low hydrocarbons(unburnt fuel), and always have a sooty tail pipe, even after a motorway run, so yea i guess its a poor fuel issue

Is it running ok? has it become more economical (crikey) I meant less economical?
Is it louder, could be there is less to scrub the exhaust gasses clean.
Bulie is right, the days of a nice brownish grey exhaust are gone, black is the colour.
Using oil?
Missfiring?
Heavy choking (it has turned a little cooler)
If it's not bust, don't fix it is my advice, mine goes black quickly too.
One thing that could be disturbed by an exhaust fitter, lamda sensors. If you are anywhere nearby pop over and I'll put it on Rovacom (small donations gratefully received).

Oh, and go steady with that advancing the timing business, alloy heads can suffer from pre ignition as can pistons. Use an octane booster and don't go mad.
