I am trying to replace the Disco rear axle flange from the rubber dohnut type to a four bolt defender type. I have the replacement flange however when it came to removing the old flange there is no nut holding it on!
How does it come off?
Is it just a case of tapping it off the splines or should I really be using a special tool?

"As I understand it there's a special tool shown, part no.LRT-51-008. This has three legs which fit into the bolt holes and a central bolt which screws into the centralizing peg, used to extract it so I would guess its a tight
interference fit. "
:(

Oh [!Expletive Deleted!]! Has anyone got one I can borrow?

In the centre of the 3 leg flange there should be a threaded hole. Wind a bolt into this to draw the cover off. It is interference fit & if it hasn't been off for some time it will strip the threads here and you will need another method.
Under this you will find the flange retaining nut.
Good luck, Dan

Use method Dan suggested but heat the outside of the flange with a blow-torch to expand it a little.
If you know someone with a slide-hammer then that may help.
You got the flange kit OK then, was it the right part number?

Put a long bolt into that threaded hole with a nut on it (you don't want the bolt turning in the thread as this increases the chances of it stripping) a thick washer and a length of exhaust pipe/scaffold pipe etc. Heat the 3 legged bit with a blowtorch, apply percussive pressure to it's outside with LR special tool #1 (BF hammer) and turn the nut on the long bolt to pull it out.

OK tried this on Saturday as I guessed it might work, however the M8 bolt got most of the way in and sheared without warning, so I will try heat and a BFH!

I got the part from MM4x4, got here very quick too, but until I get the old flange off I wont know for sure if its the right one!
The part number has also been changed apparently!

I didn't think the thread went right through, that'sa why the special tool is an external puller.
Anyway, as you are changing the flange now I'd suggest you try cutting the old one very carefully until the spigot can be pulled out.

I have got a slide hammer and a blow torch to give it a bash tonight. Will keep you informed!

OK that did'nt work as planned. It is solid!
I will try the local LR garage to see if they will lend me their tool!

Have you managed to yank your flange off yet?
