Where's the best place to get a Rivnut tool, and a supply of nuts from ?
Ta,
-
I've previously bought rivnuts online from Fastfix Direct
http://www.fastfixdirect.co.uk/code/navigation.asp?fType=Fasteners&MainCategoryID=55905
Good prompt service and sensible prices but they tend to sell in bulk quantities only, so i depends just how many you want.
They also sell rivnut tools though thay not so cheap, some people have made there own using 2 pieces of plate, bearing and a bolt.

I've got the same rivnut tool as here:
http://www.toolbay.biz
Do a search for 2478 (although 3736 is also nice) and you should find the item described as below:
(In the Land Rover section)
Riveter/Nut Riveter
This heaby duty riveter has extending arms for added leverage. Capable of using stainless steel and alloy rivets 2.4, 3.2, 4, 4.8 and 6.4mm and 4/ 5/ 6/ 8/ 10mm nut rivets
PART# SIZE RRP SPECIAL PRICE
2478 £83.16 £58.21
All Prices Ex VAT
Cheapest place I can find on the net.... I got mine slightly cheaper trade, but can't get anymore. The biggest riv nut used on a Land Rover is M10, so this is ideal (IMHO).

The reason for asking is that I was out Didcot way for work today, so popped into Frogs Island and got what can only be described as the deal of the century on a pair of genuine rear lamp guards for the 110 - £60 off list !!! :D :D :D . The guards use a combination of self tappers and rivnuts/machine screws to attach, and the guy suggested getting a Rivnut tool (they don't sell them).
However, in the fitting kit is a hex bolt, nut and piece of plate about 1" x 2", I thought this was part of the fitting kit, but it's actually the Rivnut insertion device.
So, rather than forking out £60-£80 on a proper Rivnut tool, is the lash-up nut, bolt and plate the way to go ?
I wouldn't even consider buying the tool for just the 4 fixings on the lamp guards, but I was planning on using Rivnuts for fixing some bits & pieces inside the soon-to-be-rebuilt truck.
-
At autojumbles or shows etc. rivnut tools can be had for £30, the quality is not exactly good, but ok for doing a few dozen rivnuts.
As fot the bolt+nut+plate, this has been been used many times on kit car building to good effect, so should be fine for adding a few to a land rover.
Adding a second plate and a bearing between the two is one trick people have done did to reduce the friction in the tool.

I just use a bolt, big washer and a nut does the job no problems!
-
self tap the garde to the body or drill out the rivets on the body and rivet them on

self tap the garde to the body or drill out the rivets on the body and rivet them on
The guards use self-tappers on the outside fixings, the inside (ie nearest the tailgate door) are removable fixings to allow the guards to swing away from the bodywork to facilitate bulb changes etc !
-
you dont need a rivenut gun if they are self tapers just drill holes in the body were you want them smaller than self tapper screw and jobs a gdun

Sorry, should have made it clearer in previous post. The outside of the guard (the hinged side) fixes with self-tappers, the other side (the bit you unscrew to hinge the whole lot out the way, to change bulbs etc) is secured with machine screws that screw into Rivnuts.......hence the original question about Rivnut tools  . Looking at the positioning on the truck, the outside (self-tappers) fixings screw into the corner cappings so ST's will be ok, but the other fixings are on flat panels - I guess I could use a nut instead of a Rivnut, but it would be a right PITA. I might order some Rivnuts, but NOT the tool - cos if the bish-bosh method of inserting them works, I'll use them elsewhere on the truck.

I used a normal rivet gun, put the rivnut in the hole and used a long stainless rivet from the back pulled it up with the rivet gun and by time time it snapped off it had pulled the rivnut up tight. cheap and easy
-
You will soon start to ache putting anything bigger than M8 by hand if you have more than 5 or so, used to use pnuematic ones at work but sometimes we had to put them in by hand if not enough room.
Great once in tho, far better than self Tappers

What sort of rivnuts are we talking about then?

What sort of rivnuts are we talking about then?
Little metal ones that come with the LR rear lamp guards - I'm guessing that there's more than one type (I know they come in different sizes)

There is a place at the top of the A34 in Birmingham in Athole St that will sell you rivnuts and if you bung the young lad a few quid he will put the rivnuts in for you and save you all the hassle.
