heard a rumour at work today about road tax going up on 4x4's up to about £2000 :shock: :shock:
tell me this is just a wind up :oops:

i had thought this but you can't ever be too sure.

so when landrover go bust cos sales drop what are we going to have left

It stems from comments mad by the lib dems leader (mcKenzie or something). He is trying to get rid of the promised 50% tax rate on earnings over £120K per year and he suggested that this could be done by adopting the green road tax on motors advocated by some wierdos in a goverment think tank.
The think tank suggested that 4x4s should pay £2k per annum and mid sized cars should pay £1500 per annum. So its not just 4x4s that would be targeted it would be all cars.
Lets face it, if that is voted for by the conference the chances of the lib/dems being elected drop from very low to non exsistant. It would mean that 'middle england' would become carless very quickly with only the rich having cars of any sort.

road tax should be added to fuel :x :x
the more you use the more you pay this would be the simplest thing to do, instead of hitting everyones pocket hard :x :x

ost i hear what your saying but i and many others earn a relatively low income which leave's very little spare cash and in some cases leaves you short :(
but to add to this my work involves me traveling an average of 50 to 60 miles a day and i struggle to find the money to pay for the fuel as it is and i could only imagine that if more tax was added on fuel then i would have no option but to give my job up and i would think that this would be the same for mant others.

Although it would hit me hard as my family own a sameday courier company, i have to agree with ost. The only fair way is to add it to fuel.
Pay as you pollute if you like. Why should you pay the same amount to tax a vehicle that only does 500 miles a year as a vehicle that does 60000miles a year :?

but to have £2000 added each year just on road tax isn't good especially if you have 2 or more cars :shock: :shock:
at least with my idea you would only pay for mileage done instead of paying whilst 2 cars sit on the drive doing nothing :cry:

Yup I agree too. Why should those that use the roads little pay for those that use it lots.
If they dropped beer to 50p a pint and then charged us all £150 a year pub tax to visit a pub I'm sure there would be an uproar... then again.... how sloshed could I get before I broke even :lol:

done a little working out my end and.............
if you add for instance 10p on a litre of fuel for road tax.........
my yearly road tax would be £168 using 1680 litres each year
and
and £336 for those using 3360 litres each year
and £504 for those using 5040 litres each year
and £672 for those using 6720 litres each year
and £840 for those using 8400 litres each year
now we have all seen petrol/deisel rise to nearly £1 this year and it has dropped down at least 10p so would this really affect our pocket ?

I am in favour of no road tax but more on fuel.
We have 4 vehicles but can only use 2 at a time.

The version I heard is that the Lib Dems want to put it up to that, and on a Ford Mondeo to about £850.
I've not read the book myself, by apparently Charles Kennedy has been quoted as saying his ambition is to drive everyone out of their car and onto public transport.
While this isn't a political forum, can I make a suggestion? Next time someone comes knocking on your door asking for your vote, ask them about transport policy, about preserving historic rights of way, and freedom of choice. Because if you don't, you'll lose them all!

If it goes on the fuel it also means that anyone that buys fuel in the uk pays their share too. There is lots of foreign registered cars in this country that don't pay into our system

Last time round the lib dems got my vote for talking the least ****. They have just lost at least one vote becuse the band wagon they have jumped on means you have to do more miles per year and thus cause more polution to justify owning a car on the road :?: :shock: :?: :shock: :?: :shock: :?: :evil: :evil:
Oh and even more revenue from the extra spent on fuel.
I wish them luck trying to win back that vote.

if it was just 10 pence then i would totally agree it would be a good idea :wink:

I already pay around £3000 a year in tax and VAT on the fuel I use + £350 on road tax, I don't fancy paying £7000.
If they want to do some good then they should force the motor companies to provide a more efficient means of powering our cars.
Or if you look at it another way, if it's ok to produce the motors then we should be allowed to use them without penalties.
