Top Gear Man In Crash
Updated: 21:00, Wednesday September 20, 2006
Richard Hammond, one of the presenters of TV's Top Gear programme, is reportedly in critical condition following a car crash.
Mr Hammond was hurt while filming an edition of the show and taken to Leeds General Infirmary.
He was reportedly trying to set a new land speed record for England in a jet-powered Vampire car when it overturned.
Mr Hammond was said to have been reaching speeds of up to 280mph as the accident happened.
Firefighter Dave Ogden, who witnessed the crash, told Sky News that the 36-year-old presenter was able to speak as he was taken out of the wreckage of the car.
Inspector Mike Thompson, of North Yorkshire Police, said officers were dealing with the incident at the airfield northeast of York where the filming was taking place.
He said: "At 5.45pm this evening we received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in what was described as an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield.
"The male occupant has received serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital at Leeds."
A spokeswoman for the BBC, which produces Top Gear, said: "The incident happened quite recently and the focus of our attention is on Richard at this stage."
Mr Hammond, who lives near Cheltenham with his wife Amanda and their two daughters, has also presented Sky's Brainiac and shows including Time Commanders and Petrolheads.

All thoughts for a speedy recovery to Richard and well wishes to his family from us, great guy!
Vampire used to run at Santa Pod and has done for many years, 20 at least when I last saw it, it had a jet turbine out of a helicopeter as the power plant. So is a well proven vehicle.
From what I have seen and read sounds like the twin chutes have twisted together and caused the car to barrel roll.
Another one of them "Freak" accidents that happen to the good guys
-
Hope he's back on the road soon. Ironice with May and Clarkson taking the mickey after his 'accident' in the van. Sure he'll be back. I have sent a contact at the BBC the URL to this thread so he SHOULD get all your comments, or at least the team will.

Best wishes to Richard for a full and speedy recovery, and to his family at this awful time.
Looks like we all want to see the Hamster at the wheel again. [-o< [-o<

I think it is fair to say that all our wishes are with Richard and his family at this moment, he is a profound and entertaining presenter, who is one of the few people who successfully made Top-Gear worth watching again. Anyone who has seen an episode of Brainiac will appreciate the warmth, humour and entheusiasm he brings to the screen...
let's hope he hurrys on back, TV is boring without him on it
-
Take a risk and pay the price  Only glad he's still in there with a chance to continue being here with us. From one brummie to another, keep on in there home boy and come home soon.
-
get well soon Hamster !!! best wishes :)

Top bloke. Top Gear and Brainiac are fab programs.

He's one of those people you feel you know personally, even when you don't. Top bloke.

Our thoughts and best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Richard and his family.
Just found this at http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/hammond%20improving%20after%20300%20miles%20per%20hour%20crash_1008851:
HAMMOND IMPROVING AFTER 300 MILES PER HOUR CRASH
LATEST: British TV presenter RICHARD HAMMOND has shown signs of improvement in hospital after crashing a jet car at nearly 300 miles (483 kilometres) per hour yesterday (20SEP06). The 36-year-old was attempting to break the British landspeed record for BBC car show TOP GEAR when the accident happened at a former Royal Air Force airfield near York, England. Sources at Leeds General Infirmary say Hammond is improving but is still seriously ill. He has been joined at his bedside by Top Gear co-presenters JEREMY CLARKSON and JAMES MAY. Clarkson said in a statement that Hammond and his family are "the most important concerns we have. "I would just like to say how heartened Richard will be when I tell him just how many motorists and truck drivers on my way here wound down their windows to say they were rooting for him."

This dreadful accident illustrates too graphically that cars are not toys, and shows the dangers of speed. My thoughts are with Richard and his family. But perhaps it is now time to consider why a public service broadcaster, funded by compulsory taxation, is making programmes glorifying activities that we should be trying to discourage in these environmentally and safety-conscious days.

Julian - get your head out of your @rse
How could some **** use this kind of incident to make a political statement.
The BBC make programs like topgear because the majority of people enjoy it.
rant over but this kind of moron really gets my back up.
-
Anyone wishing to donate to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance that ferried Richard to hospital can do so here (http://www.justgiving.com/PHRichardHammond)

people like julian just can't help themselves

On the early morning news today - the Hamster has been transferred to a hospital nearer his family home........and he walked from the helicopter to the ambulance :D . He's one tough geezer !
-
From what I can tell he was suffering from a blood clot on the brain which is the "significant brain injury" they were refering to, this was causing pressure on the brain which was potentially life threatening, they relieved the pressure and he's making a "good" recovery (according to the news)
What this actually entails is anyones guess, the brain is remarkably resiliant to damage, and can recover from a hell of a lot (if it was designed, then nice work that man)

Think of a wood borer bit and a black and deckker. And no, I'm not kidding :)
People have taken a lot worse injuries including loss of a significant volume of it, and still been able to carry on business as usual.

There are people living out there with only half a brain, having had one side removed they have learned to use just the one side to control both sides of the body (left side of the brain controls movement on the right side of the body and vice versa). Their language and memory was mostly unaffected too, amazing design. Here is one example http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1590/is_1998_Nov_16/ai_53349823
