occasional use...dragging a boat? dragging mates out the ditch? or dragging yourself out of 2ft of mud??
unless its the latter you dont need anything too impressive...

Lovely winch pulled a tree out the other day and it pulled my motor with the foot brake on and my cousins trooper chained to the back with the brakes on across his drive then the tree gave up,Pheww!!!

i'd go for a superwinch ep9 for the sort of use you are describing. reasonablypriced, cone brake (so could use synthetic rope), good quality.

BTW dom, have u seen how a cone brake works?
My 12k has one & in reality you "could" heat the drum up lowering out :?

no where near the levels of an inline brake like the warn XP's. The cone brake is encassed in a cast iron section too which acts as a very good heat sink.
I would 2nd the vote for the Superwinch EP9. You get sealed solenoids, a good 4.6hp motor in a package that's proven to be reliable for a lot less than most offerings. I bought mine with the winch bumper as a package and the winch without wire and fairlead worked out at 325 inc VAT.
Cheers

hardly generates heat at all, ive reguarly powered out over 70 ft down hills on comps with mine and me winch b**** told me it was hardly warm
perfect for use with syn rope
or get a husky and forget about heat build up

the bridge isnt sealed tho  still lets loads o c*** in and the motor and gearbox reguarly bungs up on mines so it a strip down job every time its been submerged....but then everyone should be stripped after bein under water for a length of time...or under mud when stuck
or else it goin come back and bite u on the bum when u least expect it
