Do transfer boxes have specific potential problems, like the gearbox that starts crunching into 2nd gear, or do they tend to just carry on working?
The above question specifically relates to 300 series manuals

Sounds like wearing syncromesh in the main box to me. Could be a sign of an overdue oil change. I think LR changed the recommended oil for the later R380 to MTF-94 rather than ATF that was put in the LT77.

I know that happens to the gearbox, but I was wondering if there were "typical" things that happen to the transfer box.

Only problem I know of is the spline wear problem, but on the later boxes LR fitted a cross drilled gear wheel to help with the lubrication problem that caused the wear.
HTH :)

Can you "tell" that a transfer box has spline wear by external inspection or driving?

hi, i noticed with my t/box the amount of travel turning the rear prop until the front prop started to move.seemed to cause horrible vibration on slowing down when in gear :(

Gords,
If you remove the cover on the rear of the T-box, where the PTO would fit, and look at the end of the shaft then if there is a grey gunge around the gear and shaft, and you can move the gear on the shaft, then that's the sights of ware.
You will also get a nice "Clunk" as you take up drive and the same if you're a bit heavy on the clutch when changing gear.
-
Er.....yeah......wot he said

get a click when taking up drive, checked the output gear thats o.k. iff you hold the transfer lever you can physicaly feel it try to knock back ,the good news is it dont seem to be getting worse. would like to know what it is though ?.alan.....

Impending doom . . . . it's a Land Rover

I don't know but I get it as well!

Well the transmission will try to rotate as you lilift the clutch to biting point, that's normal.
If you feel strange clunks coming from the transfer lever whilst doing this I'd say it's something to do with the large nut on the top end of the stick

Na, it's nothing to do with clunks from the transfer box area.
This is a "click" that seems to come from under/around the clutch area as you change gear, just as drive is taken up.
I've had it since I had the Disco and nothing has gone yet so I don't worry about it any more.

Had loads of clunks and clicks on mine since I got it . . . . was worried t/box was gonna give up shortly . . . . . this morning I fitted a new front prop 'cause the thing was shot in the sliding joint and the t/box uj had gone again.
What a diference in the transmission now. It would seem a lot of the noises were actually caused by the worn prop and uj's. It certainly runs a LOT smoother and less noisily.
