Hi, My brothers hicap 110 200tdi needs a new gearbox and transfer box. He want to buy a new one or a very good recon, as it is his work vehicle. He has had a bad experience of a Rubbish Recon box and wants the best. I have heard that (ASHCROFT ?) are good but i have no contact details :D :D :D . Has anyone got an opinion on them, or any other reputable places o go. Also contact numbers, or websites would be good. Many Thanks. :D :D :D

They know what they are talking about... are well priced and the service has always been great when I've dealt with them.

http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/ have been around for some years and do have a good reputation as far as I know. Haven't used them myself though. They certainly seem to carry stock so you can get a box quickly from them. Some less specialised places will need your box to rebuild slowing down the swap over.

I brought a diff from them about 4 months ago - pinion seal started leaking and they promised on 3 occasions to send me another - nothing ever recieved- so much for the good service.
spose I had better contact them again.

Six and two threes, springs to mind. I now know of two people who have had issues with Ashcrofts fitting service, although the boxes seem good (after 60k miles on one it would seem that the synchros on second aren't playing fairly - but thats pretty standard).
Our local (heroic) Landy specialist goes to City Gearboxes in Coventry (as do all the local taxi people), but that's not really any use to you!

I've never had any problems with Ashcrofts although have fitted whatever I bought myself. Dave is an university friend of my brother so I've always gone there and got my 1st Land Rover via Dave. They do have a lot of stock so stuff arrives quickly.
Dave,
The pinion seal on the diff I got from Paddocks also started leaking very soon after fitting it. I assumed a design fault.

bit of an update here
I moaned at ashcrofts electronically , Dave this time replied and promised to send the seal, and it turned up as promised. :D
Sam and I have fitted it today, thought that i had better check the breather banjo as the diff 'hissed'when the flange was removed. guess what - found it to be completely blocked with solid gunge/crap.
OOPPS!
so the leakin diff was no fault of Ashcrofts - sorry. but it still took them weeks to send the seal until the main man got involved.

Dave,
Land rover pinion seals are just crappy I suspect! I've always gone straight to Dave so never had any problems.
Always go straight to the top I say!
