Title: Steering drop arm
Post by: Sharpshooter on October 01, 2006, 18:54:32
Does anyone know if all defender/rangerover drop arms are re-furbishable? Mines shot, and i have a kit, but without taking it off, i would like to know. It is an early 3 bolt rangie box.

Cheers. :)

The ball joint is replaceable on all of them, but if the splines gone, buy a new one.

Only £26.00 + VAT from Paddocks (http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/DEFENDER/Steering/PAS_drop_arm_and_kit_for_3_and_4_bolt_box_RHD.html).

No, its definately the ball joint. :)

Just wanted to make sure before i rip it off. :)

Have had the ball joint for months, but just keep putting it off. I have about an eighth of a turn play in the wheel now. :(

:o  OOOhh, not nice.

You can change the balljoint wihtou removing the drop arm, but it's fiddly.  Remeber, Dremel grinds

I use a G clamp with 2 sockets, one a deep socket.

I support a socket on a small jack under the arm to compress the spring to remove the circlip.

Well. So much for all drop arms being refurbishable. I got it off, and then found that the cap that holds the guts in was peened over. Got it back, and no groove for the circlip.
So i ended up holding it all in place with a vice, and tig welding the plate on the back.

Has done the trick. :D

until the box goes, you can change the arms to the other type and then change the fitment on the link arm, so that it works off a standard track rod end type fitment

I did this on the disco the other year, it eleminates the problem of chasing springs around under the vehicle, this is as long as you have the room to fit the other type of arm in its place
