ok,
so im 18, never had to do an MOT before, and the MOT on my defender comes round in january. now, i belive there are places where you can just get them TESTED - then you do your own work till it passes right? and then there are the places where they do the work for you?
anyone reccomend whitch type i go for?
or of course i am probably hopelessly wrong and need some advice!!
cheers, Rob

Any MOT Testing centre will only do the test. Of course, many garages carry an MOT testing centre so that they can pick up work if the customer wants it done.
If you want to do it all yourself, simply thank them for the test and take the failure form or certificate with advisories and get on with it.
Simple as that.
Good luck.

if it fails on anything you cant fix yourself, ill recomend some localish garages to you ?

yup, ok. thanks. how much does it cost for a test?

Id recommend asking around and finding a reputable local indie garage to do your MOT they seem to do better jobs that the big ones.
It will cost you a lot less to do the work yourself too.
Under the new rules you get 10 working days after your fail during which you can tke the car back and the retest will be cheaper.

how do i know the good ones from the bad ones?
what should i ask them if i want to find out if its a good garage?

Rob,
Try and find a garage that only do MOT's ... as thay dont gain by failing the car
For example some council garages do MOT's
Be polite cause it may help if theres a blown bulb also check the cost of a retest ...

Also when you get chance you can get it tested so it runs out in the summer (a lot warmer and drier to work under the flaming thing, than the middle of winter)
Also some places will do a pre mot check for you, they can pick up on most of thelikely points that the mot will, and you can repair it before the actual mot
-
You can take it in for MOT 28 days (one calendar month?) before the old one expires - as long as you take the old certificate with you they will date the new one from your current expiry date OR it gives you a month to get the repairs done
