Hi. I've just bought a 90 on impulse on eblag. Seems like a canny motor however the seller says the front diff is knackered. He said that whilst driving he lost all power. A mechanic friend said it was the diff. Apparently the prop shaft is spinning but there is no movement forwards or backwards. Does this make sense? If so could I disconnect the front prop and run it in 2wd to get it home? Quick answers would be appreciated because I'm hoping to pick it up tonight!
Cheers guys.

:? I would be more inclined to say that it's stripped the splines on the main shaft?? if you drop the diff lock in that will tell you if it's the front diff it should drive on the rear!! :D

I have a similar prob at the moment with my disco.
Loads of go in engine but no drive.
On mine its beleved to be the clutch - possibly the thrust bearing.
Theres nothing in either high or low box.
-
check halfshafts too. our rear offside shaft & hub stripped not long ago which left us with no drive and nasty noises
-
So it shouldn't be anything too major to sort out?
Would a new front axle do it?
-
na,just fire a diff in it,
first of stick it in difflock & see if it drives?
as the front prop is spinning but no drive this shows that the mainshaft & Tbox are working as they are ment to,if you remove the front prop & also the drive flanges then yes you can drive it home in difflock.
it could be a diff, check the front of the casing for oil leaks or holes incase anything has jumped out,if nothing then next thing could be cv joint or half shaft, failing that a stripped drive flange would have the same effect as the above & they are only about £12

Right. Update. He says that he's tried it in diff lock but there is still no drive. It doesn't have to be in low does it? If not what are the other options. He says the prop is moving. Cheers.

2 broken diffs or a diff front 1/2 shaft rear,
what props exactly are turning with it in difflock (can be high or low doesnt matter)
-
Front prop is the only one spinning. Is diff-lock hard to engage? How is it done because the seller seems unsure of how to do it! I've never had a 90 so couldn't really say!
Cheers for the help.

When it happened it just lost drive and began freewheeling. No crunches or bangs.

push the small lever over to the left fully & difflock light should come on the dash, might need a little help in a gear to get it in

Thanks. If I presume he did in fact have it in diff-lock. Is this beginning to look like a more serious (expensive) problem? Any ideas on what else it could be? He claims that the only prop moving when in diff-lock was the one to the front diff. Something seems wrong here! Appreciate your help.

if its in difflock & the front prop is turning then it aint in difflock
if its in difflock both props should turn,if it was a gearbox fault nothing would turn,if the centre diff had exploded then both props would turn as it locks itself up
when in difflock both props are solidly joined together,

Ah. A little ray of sunshine! So it would seem more likely that he didn't have it in diff-lock properly? Which should hopefully mean that the problem is in the front diff as described? Could the diff-lock be knackered? About to set off for 300 mile round trip so could do with a bit of a boost!!

it could be anything in the front axle TBH,if the props turning going in & nowts coming out it could be...
Diff,shaft,cv joint,drive flanges,
from what youve said the guy aint got it in difflock,

Tried to phone but I think there is a digit missing!

Setting off now. Wish me luck. If you wouldn't mind sending a text to 07883 086251 I'll give you a call. Cheers for all the help.
