Title: LT77 gear box
Post by: Bob696 on October 07, 2006, 19:22:50
Sorry mods but this involves range rovers, discos and 110s   and its also a little desperate so I put it in here.

Story
Bought an LT77 of Chris 9119 (an LT 77 with the serial/model number HRC2071 SG2) marked up as for a 200Tdi
Took our LT77 out of the 110 at the maintanance weekend today and be blowed if the spline to the clutch/engine isnt different (I thought an LT77 was an LT77) Serial/model number of the one we took out is HRC 1543 DD1. The engine fitted in the 110 is a 3.5 V8 from a RR. We have been told in the past that the gearbox is from a disco.

The question is will a flywheel from a defender/disco fit into the clutch of the V8 so that the spline will fit the damn thing? or has anybody got any other suggestions?

If it will fit does anybody in the west midlands have one that I could get tomorrow (sunday)?

BTW many thanks to Chris9119 and Mark (MarkandJacks) for all the effort they put in today, I owe you one (OK many)

how many gears has the V8 got?

i rekon that the V8 box is a coarse spline & the the LT77 should be a fine spline,

also the box out the 110 if a 5 speeder could/should/maybe be a santana which is an LT85

From memory.......the v8's have a different bellhousing and input shaft to the 200tdi.
They can be changed tho

Both boxes are LT77, but suffixed as indicated above.

The one i sold Bob has a thicker engine/clutch spline than the original.

Redline
The box is a retro fit to marry it to a RR 3.5 EFi It has the standard 5 gears and the same layout as my defender 90 LT77

Just been told that there is an 'early' and a 'late' LT77. So this is probably the difference. Can jus the fly wheel be changed to make it work though?

id say that it would just the clutch that would need changed,

BUT see the box out the 110 does it split in 2 halves or does it look identical to the other box?

with the exception of the bell housing it looked identical.

Cheers for the link chris. I cant remember if the one we took out of the 110 had a black case or not ....too dirty.

There is a guy in Wrexham offering recon box for £375 inc of vat with £60 next day delivery or a £200 fitting service

I'm pretty sure the splines were identical - it was the final shaft diameter after the splined section that differed.

Early LT77 was just LT77, while the later ones that came in when the Disco and Defender entered production were known as the LT77S, I think.

i think the splines were the same
maybe the only difference is the bearing in the flywheel
ie the clutch will fit the spline
the length is the same
so just maybe ..........
i think porny will know or will be able to find out but hes prob
down the pub
lucky b.......

Not this matters at all, but the LT77s had larger layshaft bearings and dual line synchromesh - the 's' signifies the upgrade

Come on Mike, no need to be like that... IMHO your inputs are more than welcomed here (and unlike a few people on here, you do have genuine knowledge!!) - you will always fine that there is one (or more) person that spoils it for everyone!! (what ouburst by the way - drop me a pm)

Back to the gearbox:

There are two different types I think - 1" shaft, 23 spline and a 1 1/4" shaft with 22 splines, ...but I don't know any more than that... I'm not sure what was fitted to what.

I'm a bit stuck on this one.... might be worth a phone call to Ashcrofts or similar.

One of the boxes is probably a genuine V8 one, or very early etc etc....

Really not sure...

When i put a V8 in my 90 I got hold of a RRC lt77 but I had to change the clutch

and found the the bush in the flywheel was a different size !!!! so this had to be altered

I maybe wrong here but the LT77 and the Santana gearbox have the reverse in different postions

Yep, that's the situation Bob's looking at, or getting the correct box

The clutch wasn't dropped and for all we know could need changing. So I'd go with the path Daz took and keep a note for future reference

I took another look at the box today and it is definatly an LT77 but an early one.

We are going to bite the bullet and get a swop out from a recon place to make sure it fits next time. Had enough of faffing around. Thanks for all the input guys.

If you are going for a recon, can I suggest ashcroft transmissions at Luton? They did mine, and I was very impressed with the price and customer service.
