BERLIN (Reuters) - An 80-year-old German motorist obediently following his navigation system ignored a motorway "closed for construction" sign and crashed his Mercedes into a pile of sand further down the road, police said on Monday.
"The driver was following the orders from his navigation system and even though there was a sufficient number of warnings and barricades, he continued his journey into the construction site," a police spokeswoman told Reuters.
"His trip finally ended when he wound up crashing into a pile of sand," she added.
The driver and his wife escaped uninjured from the collision, which occurred on a motorway near Hamburg.
nice to see its not just in the UK that satnav's are leading people astray

Yes - damn thing tried to send us up one of the 'Police only access' thingy ramps at the weekend..........we wanted to go northbound on the M11, and the ramp was the off-slip from the southbound  , needless to say, I ignored the instructions, threw the sat-nav in the back and followed my nose (and the road signs !)

when we went to morocco in the summer a couple of the guys on our trip had Tom toms.... which got us lost in madrid, bilbao and most places between bilbao and algerciras... they were christened 'tomtom ghetto edition' because they always wanted to take us through burned out industrial estates and shanty towns.
Garmin however, didn't miss a beat, and was the only GPS to actually locate the correct port in bilbao......

my tomtom did this to me last week

They are not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but with some common sense I would not be without mine.
In Germany there is a stretch of motorway that was never built yet all the German maps show it completed.
Not really Tom Tom's fault I think!
-
I've got three satnavs, one that about 5 years old which has never led me astray, one thats two years old that likes green lanes and a little transportable (the others are built in) that so far hasn't missed a beat. The transportable one is a Garmin Nuvi 360 if anyone is interested!
-
my old boss had a satnav that liked greenlanes, at least thats where it kept trying to take me in my van
-
:D A few years ago we fitted one to a new frontera on testing it it, it tryed to take me down a green lane thought i better not chance it!!

My TomTom5 is definitely (to quote another thread) a "climate criminal". If there is a long way, or a long long way, TomTom finds a way which exceeds both.
I'm using it to drive to Paignton next week to pick up a roof rack. I'm taking the laptop, and the paper maps with me as backup.
With all the warnings on products these days, you'd think a statutory one would be "this product relies partly on common sense from it's operator".
Horness

I've got a navtec in the peugeot which is pretty good, esp around cities, the only problems I have is when I ignore her( she's called kamakaze sue btw), or indeed if I have the caravan on the back......but if I'm off road its either memory map on a pda without sat hookup or my reiablely coloured in and drawn over paper maps...
-
There are two issues here, the first being that SatNav is a driver 'AID' and not an autopilot so common sense is assumed, the second is that the map data has improved a great deal in the last three years. if you haven't updated the map then you can't really blame the system if it leads you astray!
Three years ago it was cutting edge and the map data was variable in the extreme with many routing errors which resulted in Turn Right on the M25 as you approached the M4 and other quirks. The data quality whilst far from perfect is very much better now.

I tend to programme mine up and ignore it till I get close to a new destination... then pay attention to it AND the road signs!
Anyone know how to get memory map loaded on a Windows Mobile phone with satnav (Copilot)?

What kind? If it's a Windows Smartphone then you can't, if it's a PocketPC Phone Edition then just dock the phone and load MM via ActiveStink?

So Tom Tom Must be Damn Good Then?
Cos it Must have Known that you were an Offroader In an Offroader?

I stick to a map.. In years to come people wont have a clue as to regional geography... everything will be in their sat navs and when the thing breaks down they just wont have a clue where they are or where to go... a bit like mobile phones..once we knew most numbers ...now we put the numbers straight into the phone and don't bother to remember them...
or am I just a luddite ?

I think its because it sits next to a devil duck that gave it the clue

Yup :) I agree about losing the awareness aspect when relying on GPS but for road navigation they can't be beaten when trying to find an address in an unfamiliar town etc.

I find peoples dependance on Dumb Dumb Go's kinda sad. Give me a map any time. I appreciate that some people couldn't read a paper map to save their lives, but everyone else who just relies on electronic crutches to get about and haven't learn how to use their own heads is missing out on something important. I doubt many of you who use a sat nav ever look at a map to to double check so you have no idea if its leading you the right way. Just blindly place your faith in a electric box.
Don't get me wrong, i don't mind technology and gadgets, i'm an IT geek. But i don't like dependance on items that stop people using their heads. I've seen too many stories where people get steered wrong, and followed people who get taken clear out of their way without any idea where they are or why they are there ("well, the sat nav said so" ).

Don't know if it's a smartphone or not... it's a T-Mobile MDA Vario running MS Windows Mobile 5.0... what do you think...?

We, Wendy & I followed the directions on our Navman going to the HH bash last year.
It sent us down a single track tarmaced road...., after a couple of miles there was this great big red sign saying "Danger - Live Firing Area"......, we had to continue a further mile before trying to turn 36' of BB and caravan (in the dark).
W new what colour panic was

That's a PocketPC Phone Edition. So launch Memory-Map on the PC, dock the vario using ActiveSync and then in MM from the meny choose install to PDA. A similar process to copy your chosen map cuts.

Just in case it happens again...
Red flags or red lights ( at night) must be displayed at all entrances and around the boundaries if live firing is taking place.
Lack of these of course does not allow access but it does mean your unlikely to get some rather unfriendly 7.62's buzzing around yer head!
Course, you might still end up in a blank firing fire fight. Was training on a range area near Arbroath once and public had free access when no live firing was taking place. We were lying in ambush position awaiting a patrol... just as the patrol bimbles into our killing zone... so does a dog walker... 'cept... no one saw her...
Someone remind me what the first aid for shock is... :(biglaugh)::(biglaugh)::(biglaugh)::(biglaugh):

Good job you repainted and covered up that bulls eye on the side of the wobbly shed then

Some part of Manchester have been "re-developed" and it sent me down a road that had a new block of flats built on it

Hi,
If you have the latest version of MM you can use a smartphone :)
It's not been out too long, but it is out.
