Title: Engine in and running.......
Post by: V8MoneyPit on October 26, 2006, 16:21:02
So...

Got the V8 in and running Saturday 14th. We were due out laning on the Sunday and we were still tweaking it Saturday evening   All was well until later in the day when it started misfiring and back firing like crazy... sounded like shotguns going off (well the exhaust is a tiny bit loud   ) Turns out that the rotor arm had failed in less than 100 miles. Worked fine with the old one in.

It now has a 3.5 high CR motor from an Efi Rangie with a boxer inlet and 4x HIF44 SU carbs. I'm using the electronic dizzy from the Efi. Janspeed exhaust manifolds and 2.5" system exiting ahead of the LH rear wheel through the body side. It was orginally fitted with one straight through silencer, but this was totally bonkers on noise level   So I have squeezed in a stubby silencer just before it exits through the body. Although it is still very loud, it's marginally more bareable.

Still need to get the carbs fine tuned, but they are pretty close for a first attempt.

I'm surprised you couldn't hear it from Southampton and North Yorks!! If you think you had a minor earth tremor last week...... think again

Once the carbs are fine fettled, I'd expect exactly the same as before, or better. The more efficiently the air is passed through the engine, the more fuel efficient it can be. Having said that, extra performance is also gained by flowing the air well.... and a heavy right foot might be the biggest problem

I took great care to set all 4 mechanically the same before installing them. Set all the jets to the same position and the idle screws equal. Then all the linkages so that the throttles open at the same moment, or as close as I could by eye anyway. The effort has paid off because they aren't a million miles out. I have subsequently been round with a colour tune (nasty bit of kit, but gives a good starting point!) and a balancer.

Now the only issue is that it's spitting back through the carbs at high revs. Is that running lean? Or would that be over advancing the ignition? Need to play with needles anyway.
