When you see what goes in these as an engine, that starts to sounds good.

"The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98".  Each
cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower.  Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version."

No, those figures are right.  A cylinder bore over three feet in diameter and eight foot long with a 18,000 LITRE engine (thats 18,000,000cc) for the 10 cylinder version.

http://people.bath.ac.uk/ccsshb/12cyl/ has the pictures.  Note the ladders for access into the crankcase.

So..... it wouldn't fit in a landy then...? Not even a 101...?

We went on a cruise from Vancouver to Alaska in Sept.
MS Zuiderdam,80,000 tons or thereabouts.

6 engines used 57,000 gallons of diesel a day when cruising!!
Glad it was'nt on my credit card!!!

I work on them; about 2000 tonnes New York to Southampton on QM2.

Mind you if you work out the passenger miles per gallon iys huge. 1500 or something like.

Actualyl we do use Red Diesel int eh Gas Turbines (Get engines) but we try not to use them as it's expensive! THe stuff the Diesels burn is more like treacle.
