Anyone heard of this new scheme by the goverment?
WIM Weight in motion.
It is being trialled on the M6 and about to be expanded to 13 other sites in the UK.
There is a camera to record the number plate and a strip in the tarmac that covers all the lanes of the motorway including hard shoulder. As you pass over it it recognises the number plate and vehicle details and the strip weighs each axle and can tell how fast your going and length of vehicle. So if your vehicle is over loaded it sends and alert to the police which then come out of theirr hidey hole and nab you.
Another way to get money!!! What will they think of next to get us?
You have all been warned!

Or alternatively this could be a good scheme for once which will work to ensure our roads are safe and things like LGV's (particually foreign ones) are correctly loaded and not dangerous....
Not everything is anti and bad!

I can see its up sides but how many car owners will they pull over for being 5kg over the allowed weight? I bet there will be plenty
Also if a minibus has a load of larger people in does the driver have to ask them to all be sick to loose a bit of weight before they get on board and over load the minibus?
I'm sure the goverment will get every last little penny out of the idea that they can. It is good to get overloaded lorries caught and majorly over loaded cars too, it is just how much lee way will they allow?

I doubt 1 in 1000 cars are over weight, takes some doing. However lorries are regually overloaded.
On another point, surely itll be VOSA patrolling and responding to this as axel weights etc are their durastiction?

Don't think VOSA can pull you over as such, that's why there are police when they do spot checks on vehicles.
Also agree this aint a bad thing.
LandyJames I think you'll find the laden weight limit of a bus is way over what a few "generously proportioned" people weigh. As for the rest, how many drivers out there know their max laden weight? 10%...? 5%...?
That means 90%-95% of drivers could be driving a dangerous vehicle that could tip, spin or otherwise cause carnage on a motorway.
I'm happy to drive over their strip... If I get it wrong and am over loaded, then whose fault is it... M I N E!

VOSA Officers CAN actually pull you over now, they don't need a police officer any more, there was a notice in a transport office a few months ago about it.
