i went to sibbertoft today, only lasted about 10 minutes before it bang...............literally.
i lost all drive trying to go up quite a steep bank, which i had been up plenty of times in the past. 8)
upon a sedate drive home (due to the diff lock being in), i donned the overalls and went to work, i thought it would be a snapped half shaft.........wrong. so it had to be the diff...........and it was.
both the 2 cogs that drive the half shafts had broke into pieces.
is this a common thing or have i just been unlucky :?:

OOOh bad luck Gary,
I think its quite common, I know a few folk who've had one go bang.
-
Very comon problem.........then they normaly spit all the bits out through the diff pan

Jake blew both diffs in one outing in his old V8

NEVER had one bust, heard loads of people say they have but it's one of those things. I'm gentle with my right foot and don't drive like a hero but anyone can get caught out I suppose.
I'm running stronger diffs now (lockers) so I guess it's cv joints I have to take care of now. Thing is while ever I have a stock of spares I'll be ok.
-
all fixed and back into the stick stuff
upon close inspection i think one of the little cogs had been broke for quite a while due to scoring on its shaft. ( he says knowingly as not to take any blame for his driving technique    )

Driving technique....?
What driving technique?!!!!
:P :P :P

I know people who break these all the time and others that seem to be ok
Sam, aka Diesel_boy carries a spare in the boot of his range now so he can change it whilst out!
-
you sure know how to make me feel better
but seriously...........if they are prone to breaking that easily, is there anyone who beefs them up.

ashcrofts do diff pegging which stops the flexing of the crown wheel against the pinion.

thats normally not required till you go over 200BHP,
fitting a 4 pin diff would be a good start as 90% o the time its the cross shafts that break & come out the back

cos hi inj pump goosed and i wont let him have a 200tdi engine that ive got spare
usualy the center carrier busts because, 1 wheel spinning and other isnt so all the torque of the engine going through the centre carrier when it wasnt designed for it, so the gears are working their asses off until the sieze to the shaft n bang.......anyone got a new axle casing ??
