When starting the old girl I give the plugs some heat, 15secs, then turn the key, starter motor starts to turn the engine then it stops with what sounds like a high speed wizz kinda noise, does this mean I am looking for a new one soon?
Normally works fine on the 3rd attempt

That's what I was getting...mine's working OK at the moment. The garage said it's only a matter of time though...

Try and get someone to hold the key in turnover position and then you go and tap the starter motor. If it starts then, then you'll know that's it!

it could be the starter pinion goosed or the ring gear on the flywheel missin a tooth thuus when engine rotates to a certain persision the starter spins up very fast until it grips on the next tooth and offf u go :?
just a thought
as u say it cranks then stops cranking and the starter just wizz's
danny

A knackered battery can have those symptoms as well. Our JCB used to do exactly that.

good point never thought of that
but it wouldnt spin it tho it would just click crank bit mor then click again like most wouldnt it :?

Sounds like the starter is on the way out.
The bush at the end of the shaft starts to wear, & after time the shaft deflects as the starter engages.
Finally, all you will get is a "Whiz" & no start!
