no it wont damageit, just takes a lot longer to start charging the battery... i would like to know about how to charge it faster   andyone know if its possible to get bigger/more efficient alternators? and if so how much? after all if this would be a good option for you...

Sounds a bit pricey....

I can get 100amp (new and recon) for a lot (i.e quite a bit) less than that (and they come with pulleys!)....

Without sounding rude, £107 for 2 pulleys and a belt... a belt is less than £10 (max).... what did the rest of the money go on??

Edited to say: reading your signiture you've got a Td5... which are a bit more expensive... even so that does sound quite a bit.

I think that 300 discos have 100a as std, but many 300 Defenders only have 65a - probably due to the extra goodies that come on the disco like electric windows mmmm  etc.

I ve got a 100amp on mine with split charge to twin batts - no noticable difference from the old 65a to be honest.

on  mine theres a little LR sticker on it with the part number and output on it.

if your alternator has been reconed then its likley that that could be missing

look on ebay for alternators, theres a couple of landrover independants selling good brand named 300Tdi disco (100amp) alternators for around £100 upwards... if you pay anymore than £180ish for a top brand, new 300Tdi alternator you've been robbed.

Rockingham landrovers supplied mine, a Denso model for £180...

300Tdi Disco's had bigger alternators because of the added lecky bits and because of the air-con that many of them have....

you can fit twin alternators to any Tdi engine that doesn't have air-con... i think landrover even do the bits for it, as some Wolfs had two alternators.

i think main dealers charge over £300 for a 100amp alternator!!!!!

I usually use rick over at rushden, but i need transport for one thing or another. so it was done on the same day it packed up which was outside local garage.  (i know i could have relied on the internet but it takes me half a day to figure how to turn the damn computer on!)     It could have been worse i used to have a Trooper but i wote it off #-o

so would a 300 alternator fit a 200tdi?
Title: alternator
Post by: extreme90 on November 15, 2006, 17:36:55
within reason anything wil fit anythin
afink but not sure cos i never done it, you just change the pully on the alt as a 200 tdi runs a v belt and the 300 is serpentine
but a dunno
a sure mike will be along soon to tell me otherwise

Right the pullys are different one has a bigger hole and a woolruff key hole in it. But like I had to do at billing for a mate was file out the hole and nip it up very tight. Thats how the V pully is held on anyways....
It can be done , But on the hottest day of the year sat in the sun with a file its not nice , took me ages but managed to fit a new alternator to Blacknights engine and go play in wales for 3 days...
