Its not just you. it looks like the hosting co might be having issues. Best thing is to try the other url, so if you use mud-club.com then try .co.uk and visa versa. Would be interesting to know what urls you three are using.

If nout then just leave it for a while and come back. Sure Mr Muddy is a little bit busy right now and the other admins know about it. I'll have a word though in case they dont :)

It looks like its not something they can do anythihng about anyway and it should settle down.

Me too - is the .co.uk a mirror or does it just resolve to the same IP address?

If it's not a mirror then you'll possibly get the same result

I had a chat with Datalas on the way home this evening and yes, they are well aware of the problem. Its aparently being caused by some software issue unknown and seeing as I found out that My server nd a work system is also affected its nothing to do with the Admins who are looking into it.

All they can ask is that you please bear with it and it will get sorted. That said, things seem better tonight.

First thing I learnt when I came on line - Never use a UK server or buy a uk domain

American servers are better (it's where many UK ones are anyway) around 75% cheaper and the domain names are very often thrown in.

Ahh, but you run into legal issues about storing confidential information on servers outside the country of origin :-.   Not so much a problem for mud-club but for commercial sites

that and, considering most hosting providers offer shocking levels of tech support they are really bad when you live in a different timezone.

hmm, I appear to be typing with my eyes shut again, perhaps I should have gone to bed earlier than three hours before I needed to get up again :?

Yeah, I keep doing that

I've had a few probs too but I spoke to my rep and it appeared it was the site rather than me, these things happen I guess.

Anyway, Tims hoping to raise £2.57 on the Christmas-Mud outing, so you can buy the hamster a new peice of cheese and replace the rubber band that keeps it all together for another year

Just to deal with a few of the questions / comments...

Yes, there have been a couple of issues with the site.  The server uptime is fine, but a set of conditions occurs which cause the web server to respond very slowly.  This makes it look like it has gone offline, but actually the visitors web browser just gives up before it gets any information back.

The web servers are in a cluster in a data centre in Reading.  UK servers aren't any different to US servers in terms of what they can do.... it all comes down to choosing the right hardware and network infrastructure to suit the application.  If the majority of your visitors are in the UK, then a UK-based server is a sensible thing to use, since you don't have to mess around transferring data across the atlantic.   As Datalas says, it also means that in the event of any *major* issue, I can have my hands on the physical hardware in less than 2 hours... rather than having to deal with it all over a trans-atlantic phone call.

The reason things may have appeared to have improved in the past day is because we have been monitoring things slightly more aggressively, and we can use a bit of manual intervention to prevent the problem from happening.  The source of the problem is being investigated at the moment, and a permanent fix should be along shortly.

The reason for asking which domains you were using does help... whilst the .com and .co.uk addresses do both point to the same web server, they are managed using different DNS servers, so knowing that the problem occurs with either domain allows us to eliminate that as a problem.

Thanks for your patience... we're on the case and things should be sorted soon :-)
