I have seen the AD for this guy in the mags. Its only up the road from me. My disco is a 1990 model and has relativley little rust underneath. There is a small amount of corrosion in a few spots but no holes and if caught now they will probably be okay.
This guy steam cleans the underneath and then treats it after drying it out thourghly. He then gives it all a coat of Waxoyl.
Is this worth the £500 he wants to do the job. It comes with a 5 year rust free garrantee.
I am also thinking of giving her a new coat of paint. I can't decide if I want to shell out on a proper re-spray, or use some nice Army green matt paint (proper army gear) and roller it. The current paint job is in very poor condition. No rust just scratched to hell and dull. My thiking is as a fishing truck green would be good and with the army paint any future scratches just get painted out. The finish shouldn't be too bad with the matt stuff. What do you guys reckon?.
How much is a paint job and would you try the roller first?. Is the under body job worth it or should I try doing it myself ?.
Like I have said before I intend to do some serious work on her (and spend serious money I guess) and so it would make sense to stop the rust in its tracks now I suppose.

We used to charge £150 for the steam clean and waxoil, its a job that costs in materials and labour about £50 but its a messy job, not sure what he would treat it with apart from the waxoil, a full respray including in the doors is about 1k, if your not too botherd about the door checks and such then your looking at around £750, standox paint is £40 a litre at the moment. hope that helps.

Thanks. His advert says he sprays it with a compound called Steelguard or MOD no. PX 24 designed to chase water from the engines of Harrier jump jets on navy aircraft carriers. It penitrates the chassis and leaves a paper thin coatsing that has anti rust properties so once the Waxoyl goes on it seals the stuff in there and prevents further rust forming.
Any comments on Rollering the paint work with matt army paint?.

We painted our old series that way.
The only problem we found was you used a lot of paint compared to spraying it on plus your bound to get a lot of runs.
Its easy to touch up though :wink:

a new galvanised chassis is about £1k
I would rather spend my money one one of those.

no offence to the guy but i looked at pictures of a 110 that he had done & there was loads of bits missed when he had waxoyled it,was all over the exhaust as well,done motors myself where i used to work & it is a messy job but its no that hard to do a good job

I've heard he's good and it's a sod of a job to do yourself properly, because it's so messy. Quite a bit of cash though.

personally i wouldn't pay it, there have been problems regarding that company before, and i think its a lot of money.
you're better off buying a cheap jetwash, a small compressor and a waxoil gun and doing it yourself... the gear to do it would only cost a couple of hundred quid, and you can re-do it when ever you like...

biggest problem for me would be where to do it. It needs the vehicle to be on a ramp really and I don't want waxyol all over my nice new driveway.

My garage will do it for £100 so i think this guy is atad over the top. Yes that was steam clean and waxoil. keep it in to dry as well. Plus a curt car to reck whilst he got me disco.

I had it done in July and have to say wasn't super dooper impressed like I would have expected for 500 quid. Also he wouldn't warranty it as I had some bad rust on the sills. When the back box fell off on the way back home it was clear there was little or nothing spayed on behind it. Having just replaced the back floor there was not much in the area over the tank and stuff.
I am not bothered about the warranty as I think he was right but he is supposed to have fancy probes and stuff to get at all the places not normaly got at but the amateur.
500 quid well spent? Better do it yourself.

I wasn't too impressed either - in hindsight I would have done it myself or got a local garage to do it.
I had to re-do places like the wheel arches after less than a year anyway - like you he wouldn't give me a warranty - so what's the point of paying that much for it?!

sounds like I need to find somewhere in the summer where I can get it off the floor and do it myself then. Thanks gents much appreciated.

Painted a series with 2.5L of nato green and a gloss roller, rubbed it down with an orbital sander first, no runs with a roller! Looked good and Matt Paint always looks better than gloss check out the final look here: also hammerited my chassis after a good steam clean and pressure wash up on a pair of mini ramps, worked well! I managed to do mine in a day on my drive just on a set of normal ramps.
I did one side at a time put front and back wheel on ramps and used the waxoyl pressure can thingy.
A bit of advice, cover your drive if your bothered about it and wear old clothes as it will get EVERYWHERE! I used 10 litres doing inside and out of chassis and everywhere underneath, including above the tank.
Keep the waxoyl hot if your using their sprayer as it flows much better.

Yep, My mate did his 90, made a cracking job of it, however he did look like the slime monster afterwards :shock: He did it using ramps and a trolly jack. But yes it was messy :!:
If you are doing it yourself, make sure the Waxoil tin is sitting in a tub of very hot water, makes it easier to apply.

PX24 is basically MOD equivalent to WD40 except that it perishes some rubbers, i would be a bit worried about spraying this all over the bottom of the vehicle :shock:

All done with elbow grease and a roller.
My 110 has been done underneath with some sort of treatment, chaps who replaced the gearbox said that the chassis was very sound with no welding anywhere :D

Muddyrat. I can't see much in the picture as its to small. Any chance you could post a larger size photo. I take it you used Military paint ?.
Dude thats I really nice looking job well done mate.
I will have to do the old Waxoyl myself. Need to find some large heavy duty plastic sheeting to cover the drivway.
