Title: Valve and fuel pump timing 2.5 diesel P38
Post by: Greybeard on November 28, 2006, 20:57:20
Please could someone tell me the correct way to set the timing on the bmw 2.5 diesel as fitted to a 1995 DSE RR. The crank and pump have been set to the two copper coloured links but not sure on valve timing. Need some more info if anyone can help. Head was removed for rebuild.

Thanks

Steve

Thanks mate, already have the genuine article but it seems very vague around this area, or maybe i am being thick. When timing the fuel pump , it says " align 2 copper links with marks on pulleys " ( Done )

Then when setting the cam it advises align when mark is visible. ?????????

Who is Mark ????   :-) Joking .

That is the bit that is confusing as there appears to be no mark. The head was installed after the block and timing chains, so any marks that are behind the front timing cover are now hidden. There has to be a way of timing this after a head removal. It does turn over ok and i think the timing is correct but would like to check.

Sorry; without seeing it I have no clue and I really don't want to take mine apart to have a look.
Try looking at BWM stuff (or Vauxhall Omega) they may have more.

This mark - it's not the one on the flywheel that you see by peeping through the hole in the bell housing? Be warned my flywheel has several such marks but I guess you'kk see one pretty close to where you are now.

But mine is a 200TDI.
