evening all hope you are all well so here is the question we are going to go to moroco in march next year and i wonderd if we need waffle boards or something else we have boards all ready but am looking at weight the ally ones are lighter . i have an idea can a ladder be made up of ally that will be able to do the job, second during the second war units of SAS used a roll to get them out of soft sand it looks like a roll of carpet with metal weaved into it can you get anything like this now days? i would of thought it would be lighter still than the ally . can they be made? and if so any one got an idear what to use or how to do it ?? many thanks

Waffle boards that are lighter....that would be sand ladders :)
And yes i have heard of a roll out type thing, cant for the life of me think where though.

Waffles get heavy when full of mud and won't work in dry sand anyway. Sand ladders are a bit different aren't they? not as good as bridging (even compared to waffles which are a bit bendy) but much better on sand. I've also seen full on aluminium bridging l;adders but get your walet out for them. Often a bit of ingenuity is what's called for :wink:

I presumed for morocco (never having been there) that it was sandy and so sand ladders would be what he needs as waffles are for mud.

We went to Morocco earlier this year, and its not that sandy.
Its more stony/rocky, difficult to explain, image Moon surface, thats the closest we could think of.
There are only a few areas with real sand dunes, but they were fairly easy to traverse. The key is plenty of welly to keep you moving.

Most of the Landys I've seen heading out to Morocco have had the pierced steel planks attached. More surface area to put weight on.

Don't know where you've been looking but I got a pair of 50mm thick x 1.2m long waffles for £35 off Ebay (http://search.ebay.co.uk/waffle-boards_W0QQfromZR8QQssPageNameZWLRS). :wink:

having been to morocco this year, and driven both the atlas mountains and the dunes in southern morocco, i'd say that either would help...
we took waffles and used them several times in the sand, they worked ok, as all you want them to do is increase the footprint of the tyre that is spinning/ stuck...
the steel and ally stuff would also work ok, but the steel boards are realy heavy, and the ally ones are super expensive...
my waffles cost me £30 from ebay, they are only the 38mm ones, but worked fine...
outback imports have started doing some kevlar reinforced material ones, they are like thick, stiff carpet, the guy running our trip had some, and they worked realy well... apparently they are used on the Dakar rally... brilliant in soft sand, but no good if you require any sort of 'bridging' properties..
on ballance, go with a set of cheapo ebay plastic waffles.....

Why?
For the price, the ones I have are great, sure they get clogged with mud but they all do that, it's the design.
The 50mm thick ones don't bent half as much as the 38mm ones and there isn't that much extra weight. I can easily lift both of mine at the same time (when not filled with mud!) and they have the gripper material embedded into one side.
Best of all, I can nearly get three pairs for the same price as the one set you've been looking at. :wink:

The guy I talked to, I must admit had the 38mm ones, but he reckoned that they weren't big enough, they flexed too much and sank into the mud and made the gripper material totally useless.
Always open to ideas and thoughts though :wink:

I can't remember who I got them from in the end but it took about 3 weeks of bidding on different sets of 1225x300x50mm before I got them for a price that I was happy to pay (£35) and then it came as a second chance offer.
So if you want a set then just take your time. :wink:
