Title: Slack in the drive somewhere
Post by: Leigh on December 01, 2006, 17:25:48
This has most likely been asked before but when setting off and changing gear I get the knock from somewhere in the drive train. Is there a method of finding out where it is coming from? I know this slack can come from several places but what is the best way to find it?

There is a ver slight crunch when going into 3rd gear, could this be related?

I can overcome the slack if I'm gentle on gear changes and on the clutch with low revs but I know this isn't solving the problem.

Thanks in advance

Well my 90 300tdi has done the same since i bought it a year ago,it doesn't appear to be getting much worse and i've check everything obvious, best try and ignore it till something obvious happens or replace the complete drive train,i'm going for the first option as it's cheaper.

i had this...check the prop u/j's for play, check both the diff flanges from play as my rear bearing had collapsed.try moving the flanges up and down left to right and in and out.also check the gear box out put for play.also a rotation of the flanges to check for backlash.

on mine i found both props nakt, rear diff nakt and now the front diff is knocking....

afink all landys got the slop in transmision, as in most cases its the play in the front dif and transfere box
nuffing worry about
just be abit steady on the clutch when taking up drive and changing gear

I was hoping to have taken a look at the weekend but swmbo had other ideas  Hopefully next weekend

It hasn't got any worse in the time I've had it but if its something simple then I'd like to sort it out. Just worried everytime a get a clunk that I'm making something worse
Cheers for info

Yep  :(biglaugh):

...however if it is a thud, not transmission slop, then the A Frame BJ is a good place to start

Would the A frame ball joint give that thud through all the gears or when starting off? Mine does it through all the gears as well as setting off

Cheers

yes mine did the same, if the ball joint loose or warn, it will allow the nose of the diff to move thus giving a clunk when taking up drive and changing gear and also a clunk when going to and from over run

with the A frame BJoint it tends to knock a little as well if u go over very small gentle bumps

Leigh get someone to lay under your motor whilst you let up the clutch - they can then see what moves!!!   but remeber not to drive off with them under there!!
