Title: Airbags
Post by: craftycarper on December 01, 2006, 19:12:58
Might be a silly question but i've been looking at some ads for disco's and i was just wondering how you guy's get on with airbags if offroading, are they a hindrance or can you get round this.

I've not had any problems, though I haven't anything head-on while off road.  Given the the expense of replacing them, it would be nice to have a way to deactivate at least the passenger side bag, like some American pick-up trucks have.

I think you need to be over a certain speed before they will deploy, otherwise they do more harm than good anyway, not just off-road.

I dont know about the Landrover ones but most need 25mph minimum and a head on crash... obviously they go bang in a 45 degree frontal (car crosses road in front of you) but the speed is much higher.....

I personally wouldn't worry.... they shoudn't go off!

on a Merc they can be de avtivated by the stealer but you'll struggle to get them done, as I said, don't know about landrover stealers!

All the Discos here in the US are airbag equipped, and I've never heard of a problem.  The parameters to set it off are not so much speed related as they are deceleration realted - ie the faster you decelerate, the more likely you'll hit that threshold and set them off.  I don't see that happening in an offroad situation - unless of course you crash, and then, well, you may want them!

SRS can be deactivated with Rovacom...I think mine already has as there is no warning light when you start up.
