Title: Urgent Help with a Head Gasket.... Now sorted
Post by: Cassillis on December 02, 2006, 15:48:16
Trying to get my 1996 300Tdi Defender up and running after I drowned her.
Down to the last knockings and don't have a head gasket

They come in three different thicknesses and I don't have the old gasket which would have the marks on it to denote its thickness.

Anyone got any advice please.

Has it been replaced before? Has it been skimmed? eBay are cheaper than LR for the kit's, someone's selling em for about £25 quid, the only snag being that they were mis-punched with a single hole, when they are the three hole thickness.

Its very important to use the correct gasket, you can calculate the gasket thickness from the attachment here (pt 1) (http://www.pixelbypixel.co.uk/images/headgasket.jpg), and here (pt 2). (http://www.pixelbypixel.co.uk/images/headgasket2.jpg) Remember that the head bolts should be replaced if you are uncertain how many times they have been used. (I think they have a maximum use of 5 times)

I hope this helps.

Just needs a bit of imagination to achieve the same result, most people have access to a steel rule and feeler gauge!!!

The thickness is imprtant though, after a coating of soot the pistons on an indirect injection touch the head, probably the same on a Di otherwise it won't run as well.  DTIs are not that expensive and if you are too tight you can hire them, or use a rule and feeler guages.  Skimming the head makes no difference as it's flat isn't it? the combustion chamber is in the piston (bowl) unlike the V8.
