hi on me 90 200 tdi 59000miles i have slack from my steering box to my drop arm and if i adjust it it just makes it tight to turn any ideas.Ray

Get someone to wobble the steering wheel and check the steering colum uj's for play. Also make sure the drop arm is not loose as the nut needs to be very tight( as in tightened with a breaker bar.) Check ball joint on drop arm for play while someone is wobbleing the steering. To adjust the box you need to slacken the lock nut on the top of the box and then turn the allen screw in until it stops then back off slightly and hold there while you do the lock nut back up.
hope this helps..

are you adjusting the steering box in the straight ahead position or turned to one side?
if ur doing it in the straight ahead position no wonder its going tight,do it with a bit of left or right lock
-
straight ahead , if i am stationary i can turn the steering wheel a lot from side to side before the wheels move .the skack is from the box to the drop arm.Its ugly to drive on the road wife has refused to drive it.Imust say its a bit scary
-
are u sure ? mines exactly the same as that and is the drop arm ball joint :?

Try adjusting the steering box with a bit of lock on
-
could you tell me why you need lock to adjust pls
-
The steering box gets worn the most in the straight ahead position so if u adjust the box in the straight ahead position you are taking out more slack than required,
If you do it on lock ur taking that actual play out the box rather than just horsing the box up
-
thanks that makes a lot of sense i wll try it now,how can i test drop arm for movement .back in 5mins
-
with engine running get some one to waddle the wheel and u watch to see if the arm or ball join move up or down
mine does like mad
