Clarkson on his old Landy:
it still accelerates with the verve and pizzazz of a coral reef.
ROFL!!!
-
if the defender is so bad how come it is in sub zero section on cool wall on top gear........
-
the man has a point.

Cos hamster put his foot down.

And so, when it was charged with the task of towing a horsebox laden with Evo-Stick and Araldite  or whatever it is my wife’s horses are called  it would barely move at all.
Sounds good to me
-
and what did he expect with a 2.5 NA under the bonnet? The damm thing will struggle to move itself, let alone with 2 tonne of trailer and dog meat on the back. Not surprised it took him that long to get a tree it takes 2 weeks to hit 60.
-
......if it goes wrong  and it will because it was made by communists  it can be fixed with the only item in my toolkit. A hammer.

We see exactly the same with the “proper old Land Roverâ€Â. It’s rubbish: uncomfortable, slow, impractical and with prices starting at £20,000, not that cheap. But nobody has the courage to pull the plug on a 60-year tradition, and start again. But somebody should.
Couldn't have put it better myself

No, because Clarkson had a 110 for the day and took it around London and was in awe at the way in which other road users threw themselves from his path.
Something doesn't have to be good, or the best, to be cool. It just have to have that certain 'something' about it. And like them or hate them, Defenders are a real motoring icon, and there ain't many of them about these days.
cheers

:) :) It has to be said...the man has a point...if only Mr Honda or Mr Toyota could get their hands on them...then oh boy you'd see a difference...
  Terry Smith

I am in complete agreement, infact, I feel he was being very kind.
Sooner they are gone, the better for all of us, I really do dread seeing a LandRover up ahead when I am on the road, they are a pain in the proverbial, only knocked off first place by horseboxes
If I have offended any enthusiasts in the making of this comment...
..Truth hurts don`t it

It might, if it were the truth
Thing is you don't see many jap 4x4 that are the same age as Blue, or in the same condition, or as cheap to fix, or as reliable.
Remeber, the car in front is a toyota, it's till in the b****y way though

I can't see too much wrong with this article either. I always find his writing very amusing and entertaining. This is no exception. Basically, he's right. The Defender is outdated. There is no reason, in this day and age, why a capable off road vehicle can't be ergonomically designed and have a decent heater and comfortable seats!
I absolutely love my old 110. It makes a great load lugger. It pulls out tree stumps. It doesn't matter too much if I dent it. It is excellent off road. But it's dreadful to drive any distance. And there is no way I would ever go out and spend £21k on a new one. There are far better options around now.

There is one reason why this member of Ford Motor companies premier automotive group keeps making Defenders, becasue poeple keep buying them. I believe that's called a democracy, no one is holding a gun to their heads after all.
I notice Clarkson didn't even bother trying a cayenne/Shogun/naff4 et al on his hores box.

Quite agree. But I wonder if they would sell more if it was nicer to drive on the road to equal it's class leading ability off road.

I drive mine (Discovery - muddy and battered) into the middle of Nottingham everday, and have to agree, gaps appear from nowhere when the lanes merge

The F-reg car that my wife bought for £4,000

I agree whole heartedly.
I have driven LRs since 1989 NA to start with now Turbo D and TDi.
I can fix it on my drive and I even fixed it in the deserts of Iceland a couple of hundred miles from Civilisation.
We had a Toymotor driver in to fix a computer and he went on and on about how reliable his 4x4 was. Then I showed him the pictures of what we get up to. He was gobsmacked he would never risk doing that sort of stuff with his toymotor.
Then I told him that I had been doing this stuff in my 90 since 1990.
They might not be the fastest, they might not even be the best off road, smaller, lighter may be better but it is still the worlds most VERSATILE vehicle. I went to wales with 6 people on board and all the gear for a long weekend climbing, hiking and biking all in one vehicle.
Some friends of ours have Suzukis and keep telling us how wonderful they are, but they had to get us to take some of their stuff to the National. And he spends all hours in the garage moding it so it can go where my 90 can.
