Well tonight was a bit of a nightmare, my wife was stranded in my trooper,in the middle of nowhere with a burnt out clutch. So naturally called NU breakdown, "we will pick the car up but you will have to make your way home yourself" she is on her owm 9pm, in the rain 27 miles from home.So I had a massive argument with them, its seems we were miss sold the policy and in fact did not cover us to the same extent as the policy they said they could beat. Rcovery came they would not bring her home even though customer service said they would, and also could not recover car as they didnt know any garages in the area, even though they wre supposed to take it to one within 10 miles., I ended up paying £20to get the car and my wife home. not  a happy bunny .So when they ask to be quoted happy dont believe them.

Not good :( We were with the RAC 3-4 years ago, yesterday we got renewal documents through despite not being with them ( I get free cover with the insurance), scam to get more custom anybody...

Had something simular a couple of years ago in Denmark when we where on holiday

one of the bloke with us had a V8 Series 3 and he took out the top level of Europeon Breakdown cover with a certain BIG company who drive yellow vans and have only 2 letters in their name

When he took it out with them, at a cost of £90 just for the 2 weeks we where over there, he was told, "Yep , No matter what happens we will recover you back to the UK, Yes Denmark is within our Network so dont worry"

After a slight mis-adventure with the Series 3 the engine blow, white smoke the lot

Rang said recovery company, they said , we'll ring right back, waited, and waited, then they came back and said, Sorry you will have to leave you vehicle there in denmark as it is un-ecomical to recover it back to the UK because its not worth anything  :shock:

We managed to get it back to the UK ourselfs in the end, hireing trialers etc BUT, word of warningm READ THE SMALL PRINT

Had a similar problem when my wifes Seat Arosa failed to start at work. They could take it home or take it to a garage, but they wouldn't take us home and the car to the garage. The driver (from a local garage because it was out of normal AA recovery hours) had to call the AA call centre to authorise this. He warned us about the call centre an dialed them. He left the phone ringing in his cab for over 40 minutes and they never answered. He then gave up and took us home anyway! He said he would just have to lie to his boss the following morning. Nice guy. Just a pity he had to risk his job to do do the decent thing.

Anyway, glad your wife got home safely even if it was after much grief.

I thought when I saw the title of this string it would be about my favourite subject, insurance companies.
Seems the breakdown branch are just as bad, if not worse.  Why do we bother?
Rang NU last easter for a quote on my Cavalier, 2,000 miles, second car, no comuting etc etc.  The guy on the phone then read out a telephone number for an insurance quote, I replied 'I thought it was quote me happy, not tell me a joke!'

Isnt it nice that the good old british insurance companies who lets face it, would not be here withoutout us still manage very successfully, to upset and give us grief as motorists.

"Yup. I've got the end of it in my hand"
"In that case, we'll just send a recovery vehicle around, we won't have the parts to repair that by the side of the road."

True to their word, 45 minutes later, no messing around with blokes in transit vans sucking their teeth and phoning back for a recovery vehicle, a flatbed turned up.  The chap asked me where I wanted to go, garage or home, and when I told him I wanted to go home, he just said "should be an easy enough job, anyway" without any hard sell to get me to go to a garage.

Nice to hear a positive story for once, Had good ice from individual recovery drivers before, but at their own discretion, not as part of company policy..

With the driving standards in Bombay, it's no wonder our premiums are so high!! ...... Or might I be missing the point?  :?  :lol:

Got the family cover with RAC....expensive BUT covers even the non drivers out with boyfriend or friends................ 8)  8)

And every breakdown has been fast and friendly..... :D  :D

Fixed or returned to home or garage no problems........ :D  8)

Oh they havnt me Paj yet....................................... :roll:  :roll:  :wink:

And ether Im gettin older or the repair men are alot younger than they used to be................. :roll:  :roll:  :roll:  :wink:

RAC ...

Rounded off the bolts to my alternator, declared they didn't have an alternator fan belt for a discovery, that it wasn't a "roadside repair", got me recovered home and charged me £500...

I would argue that my experience of their "repairs" has been less than pleasant.  Compound that with a three hour job to take off and replace all the bolts that they rounded and I'm not entirely amused.

I quit the AA because after a recovery, whereby they replaced a fuse and didn't check the cause, the fuse broke another 2 miles away, so they came and replaced, it went a mile or so later so they came again and this time followed me home (in the dark with no lights).  When I got my renewal they told me I had reached the fair play limit and my renewal was going to be nearly £200!

With the RAC, they left Veronica stranded at the side of the M4 Slough Junction for 3½ hours on her own in the rain, when they (contractor) turned up they didn't even check the problem and just towed her home (end had come off throttle cable).  During her 3½ hours the police told her they were goign to tow her off if she didn't move soon because she was a danger and should wait in her car if she was getting wet!  When I spoke to RAC they blamed the contractor and funnily enough the contractor blamed the RAC!

Now I'm with no one!

I think I should join something again, I've enver had the RAC or AA fix anything succesfully over about 10 years, only ever towed somewhere so that's the cover level I want - any recommendations?

GreenFlag have recently been very good with Muddyweb and Tigger, they've always had a truck out within the hour and have always asked whether they want the vehicle (and trailer) towed to the show, or back home.

They also do two way recovery, so if you break down on the way to a site they'll take you there and then bring you back if need be...

they're quite cheap if you go via the caravan club too.

I am with britania rescue, not the cheapest in the world but myself and the wife are covered in any vehicle (aparantly if a coach breaks down they will even come out to that but only to take you home not fix it, cant vouch for that though  :oops: ).
They tend to send a local contracter recovery vehicle out in the first instance who will try and fix it otherwise they recover it. Quality probably depends on the area I suppose but not had a single complaint about them yet.

Sorry to hear that you have had bad times with them.... :(  :evil:
It must be the Welsh that are the best RAC repair boys...... :D  :D  8)

I have been with the RAC for over six years and have nothing but praise for them.

I have got the pretty comprehensive "Roadside and Recovery" cover, but realistically have only ever used the 'recovery' option - I can usually fix anything that they could with the tools and spares that I carry!

I don't pay for the expensive 'home start' option, because I have a couple of cars and a battery charger - so if I can't start it at home myself, it ain't going anywhere!

The RAC have always sent a truck first time when I have told them on the phone that I needed recovery - no questions asked, no man in the van turning up and telling me the same and delaying the recovery.

They have recovered me in all sorts of vehicles in all sorts of situations with no quibble. Credit where credit is due.

I would recommend them to anyone.  Not the cheapest, but can't fault the response!

Don't talk to me about more than, they took my money from my bank account then wrote to tell me the Direct Debit had been refused!  After a few weeks, without any notice they cancelled my policy and I was UNINSURED.. My bank advised me to pursue it as a fraudulant theft.  After a couple of months they sheepishly returned the money to my bank, no note of appology it just arrived by e-transfer one day.  By the time I was reinsured by the next cheapest company the premiums had gone up.

I had an interesting experience with the AA - a friends trailer wheel bearing siezed up on us in Milnathorp, so as the AA were running their "Your the member, not the car" campaign we decided to call for recovery using my car.

The phone conversation started

AA: "What part of England are you in?"
Me: "Erm, that part at the top called SCOTLAND"
AA: "Ok, what town?"
Me: "Milnathorp"
AA: "We don't have a Milnathorp in our computer, what street are you in?"
Me: "So-and-so Street" (I forget the actual street)
AA: "Oh, we have that, your in Milton-Keynes"
Me: "Nooo... thats in England again!"

Anyhow, after wandering around Milnathorp on the mobile phone for about 30 minutes until I found a street name that was in their computer, they sent a chap in a van. He took one look at said wheel bearing and went to order a recovery truck. Then he asked to show me on his map where we wanted to go:

Me: "That map doesn't show enough detail, here look at this Landranger map"
AA Man "Oh wow - thats a good map, where do you get them???"

Actually this has got me thinking, I've called the RAC several times and always got home in the end, but yeah they are a bit hit and miss.  
Had a guy come out to me when the exhaust came loose, ended up having to do at least half the work myself,
Blew the engine in my Escort going to work in Hull, it was toast good and proper but they still sent a van out to check that having oil all over the engine bay and running on 2 cylinders it definitely wouldn't be repairable to drive back to Sheffiled!

A mate of a mate works for a Green Flag agency in Doncaster (think his dad owns it) and the pressure they put on them to deliver the goods is incredible. Of course he recomends them but to be honest I think he has a point and the reason they are cheaper is because the AA and RAC are also pressure groups, they act on behalf of the motorist to lobby parliament (though not neccesarily for 4x4 owners)

Indeed... part of the reason I wouldn't look twice at the AA is because of the anti-greenlaning stance they took a couple of years back.  The irony was that one of their booklets at the time had a picture of a 110 fording a river on the front it.

Last summer in the S111 we popped a head gasket out laning. Managed to get it to a mainish road, called Brittania Rescue & gave details. 40 minutes the recovery truck arrived & loaded us up, took us back to the caravan site as I had told them we were some distance from the caravan. While chatting to the driver on the way we mentioned about the barbacue event the group were having in the evening & he dropped the L/R off & came back the next day(10.00am as arranged) & hitched everything up & off we went.
He dropped the caravan off at the in-laws were it lives & then took us & the L/R another 15 miles to home.  He wouldn't even stop for a cuppa so I gave him £10, what a star.
Unbelievably on our last outing with the caravan  in the autumn we broke down in Yorkshire again(alternatos siezed) , same firm,same driver " hello I know you don't I"  was his greeting. He did the same again & dropped the van off & took the L/R on to our house.
I would reccomend Brittania Rescue to anyone.----
P.S. Now bought a Rangie & I know nothing about them. Next caravan season !!!!!!!---Tony :D  :D
