I am looking at getting some off road wheels and tyres for my 300 tdi, I will probably get 16" but what size (width and height) can I go up to to lift it a bit without it catching or rubbing anything off road?

Hi Chris
235/75 x 16 are the 'standard' 29" diameter wheels & tyres usually found on a Disco.
With a 2" lift, you can comfortably go up to 265/75 x 16 mud terrains, but (and this is where the Land Rover factor comes in).
With larger tyres and a lift - you may have to trim the arches a little (almost certainly the rear ones) and lifting MAY affect the castor on the front end.
hope this helps :)

Thanks for that, don't want to go to the expense or trouble of a suspension or body lift but what I was after knowing really was what is the biggest (75/80/85) size I can go to (which will lift it slightly anyway) and the maximum width keeping the car standard and not having to butcher it!!

Look at the tyre fitting guide at the top of this forum lisiting . . . . you won't get anything under the arches much bigger than 30" diameter . . . and that's assuming the stock suspension is fit and not sagging through age and/or abuse.
At best you might get an extra 1/2" under the diffs. Anymore and you will need to lift the suspension/body to clear the tyres . . . . as most have eventualy found out the hard way.
Who needs big wheels and inches of clearance anyway . . . I know plenty of stockies that do very well indeed

ayup i put 2 inch lift on mine and 265/75/16 on and i had to trim the rear arch (known as a camel cut) and the tyres rub on the radius arms on full lock. i have got another disco 5 door i am thinking of giving it an inch and a half or two inch lift but i dont want to cut the body work so i am thinking of cooper st all terrains size 245/75or 70/16 i am hoping these will be a good set up.
