if like me or mike and a few others, have your tdi turned up to the rediculous like only managing 20mpg
with a full width intercooler, ect ect
when on a run the exhaust gas temp rockets and if gets to high u start to hear funny noises from the old turbo, as it starts do sieze/melt itself together
hence his dig at me for not having a EGT guage simply cos he got one
and also he having a dig cos im on me 3rd turbo in 4 month
not due to the heat tho

Its not a case of replacing it and so on its a case of sometimes there somethings you cant afford to break money to replace or not.

I've seen pictures like this before on development engines, it's not uncommon for them to glow but a bit of air circulation works wonders you know.

That's not hot....

You want to see the manifolds and the exhaust on an engine on the test beds at work when we do full load work...
They get that hot you can virtually see through them!!!

On a petrol you just dump more fuel down the exhaust (i.e. run it rich) and/or adjust the ignition timing....

But on a diesel it's the other way around... more fuel = higher temps (thus EGT)

Anything above 800 degrees on a Tdi or Td5 and you start getting towards the material limits for the cast manifold (hence why you get warped manifolds on badly tuned diesels)... much more than this and you will also find the fins on the exhaust side of the turbo will start to break up, and in extreme cases so will the exhaust valves!!

In saying that, in the short term, and for short blasts you will get away with higher temps.... I've known 300Tdi's that peak at 1200 degrees!!

im sure on a 2 mile run at that temp, the next morning its gonna b goosed
ive just been suffering with the oil pump shaft coming out of place and getting no lube another new turbo
and then the oil cooler pipe burst resulting in another engine rebuild and another turbo
all good fun
spare engine and turbo now
for when things go t**s up again
but its sods law now i got um itll never happen again

After a long, hard motoway burn the Audi used to glow like that. Who needs under-car chav lights. New exhaust setup all I get is a dull red glow now.

Had a pic of a cossie being hammered somewhere.

(http://www.max-boost.co.uk/max-boost/images/glowing_turbo.jpg) Yes, thats WHITE hot :)
