Title: Rear Diff Pinion Oil Seal
Post by: Skibum346 on December 09, 2006, 16:11:16
Guys,

I'm posting this for a neighbour with a neat li'l samurai. She is planning to change the rear diff pinion oil seal and was looking for some advice. I know that 'Zuk's are a li'l different from the huge muck monster of a Disco I drive so I thought I'd check with you guys for advice.

Can anyone offer any insight about what she'll find lurking behind the propshaft flange or any dificulties that she might face... apart from breaking a nail!

Cheers

to be honest the bearing would have probably gone as well ,
is there any play in the pinion? slop in the drive take up

if you undo that pinion flange nut your have to reset the pinion preload just like those rangie/disco diff it has a crash sleeve that once crushed your need a new one unless you get the solid type from rs manufactoring
these seals are normally ok  even on a reuse ,  to set the preload the diff is going to have to come apart,  might be as well to drop a good second hand unit in there as cost of bearing is pretty steep.

hope that not put you off :-)

OK Matey, I'll mention what you've said... I thought it was gonna be a straightforward job as it seems to be on landies.

If I can get her to sign up I'll point her in the direction of this post and she can continue from there.

in all fairness peps do change it and tighten it back up but my waffle up there , well i suppose is by the book,

i suppose its best to kow it might be a pain than just going a head,

I have reused crush sleeves on teh front diff with fwh as they only move off road so it isnt so bad rear ones really need to be well setup,

second hand unit wont be expensive but make sure its a good one :-)
