Title: Smelly Seats !
Post by: John T on December 12, 2006, 21:17:12
Anyone any ideas how to get the smell of smoke out of leather seats..?

As a reformed smoker (10 years now  :) ) I really don't like it.

I thought of that, but wasn't sure if it would work on leather.

Saddle soap followed by a good leather protector

It is more likely to be the head lineing that smells of smoke.
You will struggle to get rig of it but go to a valeting company and ask them.
They will know how to get rid of the smell without damaging the fabric.

New headlining should get rid of the worst of it... around £85 and a couple of hours effort max.

As a non smoker with loads of mates who smoke, i've asked them not to smoke in my freebie.

1. Keeps the car smelling ok(ish)
2. i have chronic asthma, only triggered by cig smoke. Fun, eh?

I would agree to look at the headlining rathert than the seats.

Hot water extraction with an antismelly in it.

It is in the seats, because they were actually 2nd hand seats I bought to put in my never smoked in Disco. :(

get seat covers then!!!!!!!

My dad smoked in my rover 620 and the smoke got behind the lense of the interior light and that has been through the dishwasher and everything and it is still stained black 7 years on but smell has gone. I found a wet dog in the car over powered the smell of fag smoke!!!

Can help here! One company i own is a valeting one!! lol!

The smell will eminate from carpets and headlining. I will try to substitute stuff for off the shelf to make it easier for you.

Shampoo carpets with vax or similar. Dont be shy, sluice it out!! Use a good carpets shampoo, or a 1001/vanish or similar. Suck out as much as you can and let it dry with windows slightly ajar. It will take few days to dry totally!! But should be dry in few hours

headlining. Use an interior cleaner or even the shampoo again. Add around 50% dilution, or iff its dirty use near neat. Have a paper mask handy to protect the throat! Spray on and rub in with cloth. You will see how black the cloth gets! Few goes over will be lovely! Dont get this wet though, just even spray to damp and scrub with cloth.

Make sure it dries without closing the vehicle up for days, otherwise you will exchange the smoke smell for a musty one!

OK thanks for that, some useful info in there... :D

But.. as I said earlier, it's just the leather seats that smell and nothing else as they were 2nd hand seats. The actual Disco doesn't smell, it hasn't been smoked in.

I used to valet cars fo a few years.
We used to use baby wipes to clean and freshen up leather.
As said before, get the carpets shampoo'd and get the head lining cleaned.
It'll smell like a different car after all that
 :D

Fabreze

Leather food (autoglym is good)

Air freshener for a month ot two.

You'' find a lot of the stink is in the dirt on the leather, not the hide itself, plus the carpets and trim/headlining.

Nasty isn't it? shame too.  Smaking is striclty speaking illegal the way mi=obile 'phones were before they got their own law.

Thing is the gov't can't tax 'phones as highly so they get banned whilst smoking at the wheel doesn't
