Title: Ideal 4x4
Post by: thermidorthelobster on December 17, 2006, 12:12:58
If you could have just one, what would it be?  To combine practical, reliable,  capable.  I'm not thinking so much of Bowlers here as something you would want to use daily for all sorts of stuff and keep for many years.

I'd go for a 300Tdi 110CSW with an R380, Patriot roof rack, a couple of inches OME suspension lift, BFG All Terrains (not sure what size...), 12,000lb Warn on the front.  (Actually, apart from the winch, I've just described my friend Dave's 110.)  Plus I'd go for extra soundproofing, and I'd get it Before-n-Aftered.  Add locking diffs front and rear and a snorkel, and Bob's your uncle.

I have been using an Isuzu Trooper for a number of years to do just that.

When you start talking of winches, suspension lifts, lockers, etc then you aren't talking every day use

I'm hoping to build mine next year (over a time span)

Going to get an old 110 and rip it to pieces and start again.  Looking at preping it for an expedition.

Was looking into the before'n'After and Kleentecting (sic) nice and expensive!!

Gonna have shed loads of lights, winch, roof rack, fridge, extreme suspension, Clifford alarm plus some nice trick bits.  8)

Got to roughly agree with David

Just a few other factors

Better steering lock (different rims?)

Higher gearing (overdrive, not a transfer box change, so as to make allowances for towing?)

Water-tight (no ingression)

Recovery/towing integrated into chassis (without any approach/departure issues)

Central Locking (very useful)

External cage (colour-coded to blend in as fae as possible, with pck-up mounts for roof-rack, aeriels, lights etc....)

Better dash/interior design (something like the ex-Tom Sheppard 90)

Oh crikey, I know this one without a second thought

As comfy as the LSE with all the toys
As fast as the LSE (5.0L V8)
As good at towing as the LSE

Lifted, but not all the time (LSE again  )
scratch resistant
Capable off road (Blue)
Good on road, oddly Blue again :?

and as cheap to run as the 300TDi.

Yes if I could combine all 3 cars out on the drive into 1 it would be my ideal.

Love my 90, it does everything competently i would only improve the door seals and sunroof so i stayed dry when it rains.

If I had to have only one vehicle it would be my Delica
Comfortable seven seater (all forward facing, four seated in captains chairs!)
As good as a standard Disco off road
part time camper
Capable as a van

May not be the ultimate off roader but is very capable and has so many uses wrapped up in the one package, but as a dream package it would have to be a lifted one like this
