Post by: smo on December 17, 2006, 19:29:28
Does nowhere do anything remotely USEFUL at college evening courses anymore, i want to learn to weld, and also paint spraying (car) but all i can find are courses for gcse maths, and english for foreigners :(

sparsholt do an evening course,  but £300 and 2 evenings a week with a 1hr commute each way might not be so feasable!

I think you'll find that most technical colleges (in fact no longer exist as such) and can only run courses that pay their way. In the good olde days they were seen as delivering a useful social function and you could take a total cost overview by department.

But bit by bit that changed and each course had to balance its books and many automotive departments went, then the engineering departments went.

Very sad and a real loss to the community IMO, one of the bad bits of teh Thatcher years that New Labour have not seen fit to repair.

So, I suspect you'll struggle to find a suitable course. You might find that some clubs offer tuition - a friend goes to a steam model club and they teach one another remarkable practical engineering skills. They don't do awfully big but they do very high quality!

Well i shall keep looking but otherwise i might need to be helped by a fellow MC'er.

Thing is i also wanted to go back in such an environment to start piecing my life back together after it recentyl fell apart, just to expand my social circle type thing - now that makes me sound loopy, but i'm not, honest!  :?

Nowt wrong with that.  I've had a couple of phases in my life when I've drifted away from my close mates and had to 'fend for myself'.  Luckily I had taken up archery at university so I started shooting with a local club.

I met the wife there and one of my closest mates, he was usher at my wedding.  My best man was my best mate at Uni.

You find you make friends easier with people who have a common interest anyway.

Take this place......

Anyway, I already offered to teach Keith to weld, but you're a bit far aren't you mate?
