will it come out of gear without the engine running? If you try and start the engine without depressing the clutch does it try and leap forward?

We havn't had the engine running yet and the clutch pedal is on the floor, the gear lever is solid though, you can't budge it.

Seems that we were lucky and it required just the top cover removing and the selector rods moving, fingers crossed.

while you have the top cover off, heres a job for you.  get some emery paper and lightly sand the detent spring channels and keep trying the plungers in the casing for fit these should be a nice fine sliding fit.
also do not tighten the top cover fully or you will crush the casing and nipping the detent bearings.
doing this will make the fitting easier and will change gear better
hope this helps
