Thing is who's car was it? if it's nicked the poor b*****d who used to own it will have to pay out under the road traffic act (actually his insurance) if it belongs to the git who was driving then shouldn't the car be forfeit in compensation?

But no, the poor law abiding motorist foots the bill.  Feel real sorry for the guy, that's 2 I've heard of in as many days, and I havn't been out much

They could try contacting the MIB (http://www.mib.org.uk/MIB/en/Default.htm) it is supposed to be there for this sort of situation

Mib is the way to go
I have heard you can claim off the owner of the car even though he wasnt driving it ( please check this)
If you have legal protection get on to them asap and they should do it all for you

Wait till the summer, find the lad, strip him, stake him out on a field by his ankles and wrists, spread jam all over him, wait for the Ants, Bees and Wasps, video it and put it on Youtube, usuall works, if not lock him in the boot of a car for a few days

this may be a suitable punishment in other parts of the country but remember that the crime was committed in BRIGHTON so other ideas need to be thought of.
maybe blackbob has some ideas

turns out that the police stopped the same car the day b4 but didnt impound it even though it had no tax or insurance

the driver was 15 and drunk and asked his m8 to show him how to reverse and he floored it and hit the neibours car and  a wall and the neibour saw him and grabbed him and then waited for the police to come and they took him away
then the next day(xmas day) there mum ended up in hospital via an ambalance  so they didn't have a good xmas

Yes, unfortunately by the road traffic act, if the car was stolen or otherwise belonged to another party who insures it then that party pays (via an insurance claim obvioulsy).  This is to ensure that 3rd party damage is covered by insurance where possible.

What gets tricky is when the car belongs to someone who doesn't insure it, whether or not it was stolen, you then have to persue the driver IIRC.

If the car belonged to the driver (or a passenger in it in this case) I think the car should be forfeit as compensation, but it does't work like that does it, the law protects the criminal
