I drove up to the Tan Hill Inn (the highest pub in England, about 20 miles away) yesterday to show a guest a little of the Dales. The fog got thicker and thicker the further I drove from home, the grass on the verges got more and more covered in frost as I drove higher into the moors, patches of ice began to appear on the road surface, then magically I came out above the fog into glorious sunshine with no frost, no ice.
If only I had taken the camera, the views were fantastic looking down onto a level sea of fog with the odd hill, island like, sticking up. I did take a couple with my phone but the quality is just not up to the job.

did a similar thing a few years back - delivered into Holmfirth, and decided to come back via the moors - had been in Fog all morning - but climbed up onto the top - by the bbc transmitter and blue sky and sunshine - but it was about minus 10  .. lovely and quiet too!!

Boxing Day a few years back we climbed Scafell Pike in the Lake District. Looking South we had a great view of the Snowdon massif over 100 miles away above the interviening sea of fog. The Isle of Man- which is much closer was hidden in cloud!
You can see the Snowdon range on the horizon of the photo.

Where I live is notorious locally for it's fog coming off the lake. You only have to drive a couple of miles out and you are above the fog. It can be quite spectacular and you feel distanced from the real world.
Took these yesterday at 1.00 pm when the sun was burning through the fog. It was still -2C.

A few years ago we kipped in the hut at the top of Cadir Idris Snowdownia .
When we got up at about 0530 the view was one of the best Ive ever seen and I been around
There was a themal inversion and it was like looking out of an airplane window and we watched the sun rising above the clouds.
Magic :D

My mother was born and raised at the foot of the mountain and I know some of the area (I should make more of an effort to learn more  )

We saw that!! We were crossing the A66 on Sunday (about 2.30) and as you say, it was fantastic as you climb out into the sunshine and the valley was covered in white fluffy stuff (I'm sure that's the technical term!!).

I'm amazed anyone would want to sleep in there. Last timed I looked inside it stank of p!ss. If it wasn't raining I would sleep outside.

It used to quite clean, even spotless in there :?
It got so cold in there we moved outside with the bivibags , condensation was dripping down off the tin roof onto us before it froze
Alot better outside

I slept outside in the Alps at 11,000 feet once- fully clothed (inc coat) + two sleeping bags + feet in a rucksack! I just dug out the photo below taken at night looking across at Mont Blanc from Grandes Montets- awesome view!

If I tried to repeat some of the exploits from my 'younger days' I'm sure I'd expire now- and I'm not even fourty yet!
Still, looking back through my old slide photo collection brings back good memories. In fact if wasn't for the pictures I would probably forget I even did these things!
Going back to the original mist theme- I've just scanned in this slide photo of dawn mist during a Sea Trout fishing trip to the river Tywi (Towy) in Wales (1996).
