Title: Need Help - dropping discovery - is this right?
Post by: cominsa on December 28, 2006, 17:06:56
I've got a 51 Disco 2 which has been left over christmas on the drive. When we came to drive it yesterday I noticed the back had sunk so that there was about 1.5" from wheel to wheel arch. On starting up, after about 2 - 3 minutes it was sorted and the front and back look the same.

This morning I went to clean it and noticed that it had sunk again but this time it was more on the passenger side. it corrects itself after 2 -3 minutes on tickover. There are no mods on it yet!

Any ideas, I don't want to take it to the garage without having some idea.

Sorry for lots of questions, thanks Andy

That'll be your SLS (self-levelling suspension) playing silly beggars.

Could be one of several things at fault:

 - the compressor/valve block sits under the n/s of the vehicle (under the front passenger door).

 - one or both of the airbags (used instead of rear springs) may have sprung a leak/got punctured.

 - the air feed pipe from the valve block to the airbags (not sure if they have separate feeds ?) may be leaking

As the vehicle seems to level out after 2-3 mins with the engine running, this would indicate a leaky valve/airbag/pipe somewhere - rather than a completely failed compressor or valve block.

You could try the 'washing liquid & water' trick to try and locate the leak - you might get lucky. Airbags can be replaced, but they're not cheap - some peeps remove the SLS and go for standard coils instead.

Let us know how you get on,

park you disco on level ground, set to high level and wait for a couple of mins, reset to normal and then repeat a coulple of times and you may find it may be ok.

might have some dirt between the seal and "playing with it" for a couple of times may sorted it.

But you may also find thet it may be just one of them things with your disco.

ours  drops after about 5 days, but only at the rear.

Found the problem, it was both airbags which were leaking. Had both replaced and now it is back to normal. Thanks for the help

I used to drop cars off at Southamton docks for export every week, There was always loads of new Disco 2's there waiting to go to the states, 99% of them were down in the back! SO they are like it from new!
